March Madness bracket predictions 5.0: Projecting the Field of 68 for 2022 NCAA Tournament

By | March 2, 2022

Selection Sunday is suddenly just two weeks away.

With that in mind, Sporting News unveils its fourth Field of 68 for the upcoming NCAA men’s basketball tournament, which begins on March 15. This year’s Final Four is at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans from April 2-4.

Each week, SN will update our tournament projections leading up to the Big Dance.

The top six teams in the country lost on Saturday, which means our No. 1 seed line actually didn’t change. Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas and Auburn hold those spots, but the No. 2 line features a few teams that could steal a No. 1. Kentucky, Baylor, Duke and Texas Tech are very much in the mix. The Big Ten race between Purdue and Wisconsin also is worth watching.

We also will break down the tournament bubble each week. Right now our last four features Indiana, BYU, SMU and Florida, and there are several teams in the hunt.

Who is our Field of 68? Here is a closer look:

*Arizona (25-3, 15-2 Pac-12)

Resume: Net: 2, KenPom: 4. Wildcats can take control of the Pac-12 race with victory against USC on Tuesday, which would put the loss to Colorado in the rear-view mirror.

*Kansas (23-5, 12-3, Big 12)

Resume: Net: 6, KenPom: 7. The Big 12 champ is going to get a No. 1 seed. The only question is whether it’s going to be the Jayhawks or Baylor.

*Auburn (25-4, 13-3 SEC)

Resume: Net: 11, KenPom: 8. Auburn is 3-3 in its last six games, but can close strong ahead of the SEC tournament, where they can lock up a No. 1 seed.

No. 2 Seeds

Kentucky (23-5, 12-3 SEC)

Baylor (25-5, 13-4 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 5, KenPom: 3, Bears took care of Kansas at home in an 80-70 victory, and they have a near-identical resume to the Jayhawks. A potential rubber-match in the Big 12 tournament will be the difference-maker.

Texas Tech (23-7, 12-5 Big 12)

Resume: Net: 10, KenPom: 9, The 69-67 loss to TCU on Saturday was a setback, and that might keep the Red Raiders on the No. 2 or No. 3 line as a result.

No. 3 Seeds

*Wisconsin (23-5, 14-4 Big Ten)

Villanova (21-7, 14-4 Big East)

Resume: Net: 8, KenPom: 11. Villanova is 6-6 in Quad 1 but 15-1 in the other three quadrants, which prevents them from significant line movement either way.
