If the pre-season projections are to be believed, then Saturday’s battle between Everton and Nottingham Forest is an early Premier League relegation six-pointer at Goodison Park. 

Everton are desperate not to lose a third straight match to start the Premier League season after dropping results to Chelsea (1-0) and Aston Villa (2-1). That’s not happened since 1990.

While rumors swirl regarding a potential transfer of Everton star attacker Anthony Gordon to Chelsea, Toffees supporters will be hoping that newcomer Amadou Onana can provide a boost to the struggling side.

Newly promoted Nottingham Forest are riding high, boosted by last week’s inspired 1-0 win over West Ham and a host of new signings made this week, headlined by a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White that could reach £42.5 million ($50m). Several of the newcomers will be on the bench for the match.

62nd min.: Everton chance. Another sure-handed punch by Forest ‘keeper Dean Henderson on a set piece that struck the ground right in front of him. 

60th min.: Forest sub. It’s the Nottingham Forest debut of new signing Morgan Gibbs-White, who is wearing the No. 10 jersey and replaces Taiwo Awoniyi. The Nigerian didn’t have many looks and couldn’t convert on the best one he did get.

57th min.: Yellow card. It’s shown to Amadou Onana for a foul on Taiwo Awoniyi.

57th min.: Everton subs. Amadou Onana and Dwight McNeil replace midfielder Tom Davies and forward Salomon Rondon, respectively. Onana is given a warm welcome from the home crowd.

52nd min.: Forest sub. It’s Ryan Yates making his Premier League debut coming on for Orel Mangala in midfield.

52nd min.: Everton chance. It’s a Solomon Rondon sighting! He takes the ball with his back to goal, shakes off the defender on the spin and fires at goal but misses wide left. Amadou Onana warming up for Everton.

46th min.: Start to second half. No subs from either side to start the second half. But Dean Henderson is now wearing a cap with the sun in his eyes.

Halftime: Everton 0, Nottingham Forest 0

Halftime: Nottingham Forest ended that half on the front foot and the visitors look increasingly comfortable as the match wore on. Taiwo Awoniyi had the best chance of the first 45 minutes, but couldn’t capitalize. You’d imagine manager Steve Cooper will bring on one or two of his new signings which could help tilt the match definitively in Forest’s favor.

But it was Forest ‘keeper Dean Henderson who was the busier of the two netminders in the opening stages with Everton’s Tom Davies, Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray all buzzing in and around the box. Alex Iwobi has put in a good shift in midfield, but forward Salomon Rondon has been a non-factor and the two Everton wingbacks have been busy defending. Amadou Onana is an obvious choice off the bench to provide the Toffees a lift.

35th min.: Yellow card. It’s shown to Everton’s Alex Iwobi, who stopped a promising Forest counter with a hand ball. Iwobi has been earning plenty of appreciation from the home crowd for his hard work so far in central midfield.

33rd min.: Forest chance. Shot on goal by Orel Mangala from the top of the box. Nottingham Forest are showing good composure when they get the ball around the box, getting players involved in the movements.

29th min.: Yellow card. Forest right wingback Neco Williams gets a yellow card for a foul on his Everton counterpart Mykolenko. And Dean Henderson comes up with another big stop on Demarai Gray’s direct attempt.

24th min.: Forest chance. What an opportunity for Taiwo Awoniyi! Teammate Brennan Johnson strips defender James Tarkowski of the ball and Awoniyi gets the ball in the box, but he’s undecided and just flicks the ball at goal. Easy stop for Pickford.

21st min.: Yellow card. Caution shown to Nottingham Forest center-back Joe Worrall. He’s the weak link of the Forest back line and he has to pull down Demarai Gray after doing the same to Anthony Gordon in the opening stages. Nothing comes of the set piece.

19th min.: Forest chance. Nottingham Forest’s first real threat of the match. Neco Williams fires on goal and Everton ‘keeper Jordan Pickford has to parry it away. Moments later Lewis O’Brien fires just high.

14th min.: Everton chance. Forest ‘keeper Dean Henderson has to make two stops, first on a searing shot from Anthony Gordon and then on a shot by Demarai Gray. Everton have had the better start to this one. The Toffees are aggressive and create danger when they push up into the attack.

10th min.: Everton chance. Tom Davies with another chance! His diagonal shot from the top of the box is wide. Interesting decision by Frank Lampard who picked him over Amadou Onana.

The wind that is whipping is wreaking some havoc with the ball flight.

3rd min.: Everton chance. Chance for Everton! Tom Davies nearly gets to a set piece delivered in the box. Anthony Gordon won that set piece and he’s already targeting Forest center-back Joe Worrall.

1st min.: We’re off under the sun. Both clubs in their primary colours.

5 mins from kickoff: We’re just about ready to go from Goodison Park. There’s a moment of silence for former Everton chairman Dr. David Marsh.

100 mins from kickoff: It’s been a while since these two teams met in a competitive match. The last time was January 1999, when Nottingham Forest beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison. That was one of only eight all-time Forest victories in the top division.

120 mins from kickoff: How about this for some added intrigue for this match? Everton reportedly tried to hijack the much-discussed Morgan Gibbs-White deal at the last minute.

Everton manager Frank Lampard will have to do without midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (hamstring) for a few weeks, and it’s Tom Davies who earns the call to replace him over Amadou Onana.

Allan is back on the bench, but key players remain out: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (knee), Yerry Mina (ankle ligaments), and Ben Godfrey (fractured fibula). Dele Alli’s move to Besiktas reportedly only needs his sign-off, but he’s still on the bench against Forest.
