James Maddison fired a brilliant equaliser to bring Leicester level before Rodrigo Bentancur put Tottenham 3-2 ahead early in the second half of a Premier League thriller in north London

Brendan Rodgers’ side headed into the match bottom of the table and on a run of five consecutive defeats, but they were handed an early gift as Davinson Sanchez needlessly slid in to bring down James Justin.

Hugo Lloris plunged to his right to keep out Youri Tielemens’ initial penalty but VAR showed the Spurs goalkeeper encroached from his line and the Belgium midfield made no mistake the second time around.

Tottenham were level a little over two minutes later, as Harry Kane nodded in Dejan Kulusevski’s cross from a short corner. The Foxes’ set-piece frailties were exposed once more when Eric Dier converted Ivan Perisic’s 21st-minute delivery.

But Leicester responded by taking the game to a similarly flimsy Tottenham defence and Maddison caressed a lovely first-time finish from Timothy Castagne’s cross four minutes before the break.

As a manager under pressure, it will have been galling for Rodgers to see Ndidi cough up possession to Bentancur two minutes after halftime, with the Uruguay international streaming forward to slot home his first Tottenham goal.

60th minute: The same combination frighten Tottenham again. Tielemens and Barnes play their way through midfield, Maddison takes up the attack down the right channel and Daka sends a diving header over from the resulting cross.Hang on a second, the Leicester striker actually tried to convert that with his arm and is booked.

58th minute: It’s another sensational save from Lloris. Maddison flips one into the box and Daka gets to the header ahead of Sanchez. Lloris is at full stretch to turn the bouncing ball away.

56th minute: Still absolutely no let up. Leicester have Maddison standing over a nicely placed free-kick 25 yards from goals but Spurs get it away. Son and Romero are getting ready to come on for the hosts.

53rd minute: Remember Dier’s goal from Perisic’s corner in the first half? Well Spurs have been allowed to do that again but Ward pouches the header this time.

48th minute: Not a great few minutes for Ndidi, who is now booked. To be fair, Evans sold him short with an awful past that left him little option but to clatter into Hojbjerg.

47th minute: GOOOALLL!!!!Bentancur!!!

The silliness continues. Ndidi has his pocket picked by Bentancur, who charges through to score his first goal for Tottenham.

46th minute: Everybody got their breath back? We’re back underway. No changes for either team.

Halftime: What a nonsensical, error-strewn, breathless, brilliant first half of football that was. Some majestic play from the likes of Perisic and Maddison and the sort of defending that will leave Brendan Rodgers tearing his hair out and Antonio Conte…nevermind. See you in short while.

45th minute+2: Brilliant save from Lloris. Barnes and Daka shift a flowing Leciester attack in that Maddison looks poised to convert. Lloris stands firm and saves with his boot. 

44th minute: Tottenham are handling Maddison in open play about as well as Leicester are handling Perisic from dead balls. The Foxes’ playmaker appears to have the opposition defence on length of string as he pops his latest shot wide from the edge of the box.

43rd minute: Sanchez hits the crossbar! For crying out loud, Leciester just cannot defend set pieces. It’s another lovely delivery from Perisic and Sanchez rises highest. On closer inspection, Ward got fingertips to that. It’s a fantastic save.

41st minute: GOOOALLLLL!!!! Maddison!!!!!

Glorious finish from Maddison. It had been coming! Rodgers’ switch to match up against Spurs’ wingbacks pays dividends as Castagne bullies Sessegnon on the end of a crossfield ball. Maddison still had plenty to do but caressed a superb first-time finish across Lloris and into the top corner.

38th minute: Sloppy again as Tottenham don’t properly clear their lines. This time Ndidi clatters beyond the crossbar. Leicester should be working Lloris more than they are. Kane trots back to have a word, presumably along the lines of asking what on earth is going on.

37th minute: If Leicester weren’t involved in this game, you’d say Tottenham’s defence stood out as being nervy and awful. Again they don’t clear and Barnes swivels to shoot over from a tight angle.

34th minute: That’s a better chance than it was made to look for Leicester. A mistake from Bentancur, Dier can’t head completely clear and Dewsbury-Hall slashes way over from the edge of the box.

31st minute: Sessegnon get the ball in an absurd amount of space. He used that by blasting the ball at Kane, who it bounces off and Richarlison finishes the whole passage with an air shot. There’s some outright silly football going on here.

29th minute: Kulusevski looks to play in Kane but Faes reads the pass well. Leicester break, Daka has a sight of goal but shoots tamely at Lloris from 25 yards.

27th minute: Into the net again, but Sanchez is penalised for a foul on Ward. That’s weak goalkeeping, to be honest, and the Leicester number one probably gets away with one. Perisic’s delivery sailed over him into the top corner.

25th minute: A chance for Leicester after Perisic cough up possession but Tielemans and Maddison overplay it. The worse news for the visitors is Tottenham break and win a corner.

21st minute: GOOOAAAAAALLLL!!!! Dier!!!!

Reader, they did not defend that one any better. Perisic takes a more direct route this time, whipping in a devilish delivery and Dier marks his England recall by glancing past a helpless Ward in the Leicester goal.

20th minute: Richarlison chases what looks like a lost cause but he harasses Castagne into giving a corner away. Leicester will have to defend this better than they did the last one.

18th minute: Now it’s Tottenham’s turn to do some last-ditch defending as Dier lunges in successfully on Daka. It’s harum-scarum stuff.

16th minute: Kulusevski is bang on it down that right-hand side. He finds Kane, who is dispossessed but continues his run. Hojbjerg’s decision to ignore it and blast a shot miles over isn’t a popular one.

13th minute: Perisic cuts inside and engineers space to shoot. Ndidi slides in to make a desperate block. Leicester look so vulnerable every time Spurs attack.

9th minute: GOOOOAAAALL!!!! Kane!!!!

That’s exactly why Leicester are on the bottom of the table. Kulusevski makes an angle for a cross after receiving a short corner from the right, clips it to the far post and Kane gets in behind Castagne to head home his sixth Premier League goal of the season and, remarkably, the 20th of his career against Leicester. The lead lasted two minutes and eight seconds.

6th minute: GOOOAAALLLL!!!! Tielemans!!!!

No mistake this time. Tieleman holds his nerve, changes sides and slam the penalty high into the net.

5th minute: SAVED!! Lloris launches himself to his right and produces a superb save to deny Tielemans. Oh, but hang on… Lloris came off his line, there will be a retake.

4th minute: PENALTY TO LEICESTER! Good heavens, Davinson Sanchez, what on earth are you doing??? Maddison has Spurs scrambling with a fine crossfield ball and Sanchez slides in on Justin, somehow avoiding making contact until the wingback gets into the area.

3rd minute: Perhaps inspired by the fact Leicester’s defence looked non-existent against Brighton, Kane tries to take them on all at once. A combination of Evans and Ndidi eventually avert the danger.

1st minute: We’re underway, with Faes hairdo immediately grabbing the attention.

5 mins from kickoff: The players are out to observe a minute’s silence and the UK national anthem as a mark of respect for the late Queen Elizabeth II.

20 mins from kickoff: Faes inclusion has what could be an important knock-on effect of Wilfred Ndidi being able to line up in his natural position at the base of the Leicester midfield. Ndidi has been filling in at centre-back recently and Leicester are a weaker team without him in the engine room, as some fairly dismal results suggest.

40 mins from kickoff: It’s hard to argue against Conte’s decision based on form, even if seeing a Tottenham lineup without Son feels jarring. Kulusevski has been superb since his January arrival from Juventus, scoring six goals and supplying 10 assists in 25 Premier League appearances. 

1 hour from kickoff: Here are the teams. Conte has indeed decided to drop Son Heung-min to the bench, with Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison starting in attack alongside Harry Kane. Ryan Sessegnon gets a run-out, with Emerson Royal resting among the substitutes.

Rodgers makes three changes to his Leicester side, and they include handing a Premier League debut to defender Wout Faes. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Timothy Castagne also return.

1 hr 20 mins from kickoff: Furrowing your brow at a sub-standard Champions League performance would probably feel like the height of decadence for Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers right now. His team is bottom of the table, with their six games yielding one point, and that came on the season’s opening weekend when they let a 2-0 lead slip to draw with Brentford. Last weekend’s postponed encounter with Aston Villa might have felt like a bit more of an agreeable assignment for Rodgers, whose King Power Stadium tenure has entered rocky ground.

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: After an impressive, unbeaten start to the Premier League season, things all went a bit ‘Spursy’ in midweek for Antonio Conte’s men. Tottenham were a touch unfortunate to concede two goals at the death against Sporting CP, but it was a listless display overall in Lisbon and an outing that gave rise to further concerns over Son Heung-min’s form. The South Korea star is without a goal in eight matches this season and Dejan Kulusevski is pushing hard for a return to the starting lineup.

Son Heung-min extended his run without a goal to eight matches this season in Lisbon and Conte has taken the South Korean star out of the firing line and restored Dejan Kulusevski to his starting XI.

Clement Lenglet comes back into the back three in place of Ben Davies, while Conte has stated Emerson Royal is “a bit tired”, so he starts on the bench. Ryan Sessegnon is the beneficiary of that change, with Ivan Perisic switching to right wingback.

Rodgers has made three changes to his team overall, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Timothy Castagne returning, while Wout Faes makes his full Premier League debut at centre-back.
