Saints vs. Cardinals live score, updates, highlights from NFL ‘Thursday Night Football’ game

Two struggling franchises look to get back on track as the Saints face the Cardinals in the Week 7 edition of “Thursday Night Football.” 

Both teams enter the game sitting at 2-4 after losses in Week 6. The Saints fell 30-26 to the Bengals while the Cardinals stumbled to a 19-9 loss against the Seahawks.

New Orleans led by as many as 10 points against Cincinnati but fell victim to a late Joe Burrow rally as the Bengals came back to earn the win.

Burrow thoroughly outplayed Saints quarterback Andy Dalton, who finished 17 of 32 with 162 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. But with Dalton popping up on the Saints’ latest injury report (along with fellow QB Jameis Winston) it remains to be seen who will start under center this week. Taysom Hill remains an option after his huge game in Week 5.

Meanwhile, Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury is starting to come under fire after an underwhelming start to the campaign.

The team failed to score an offensive touchdown for the second time this season last time out against Seattle. Kyler Murray hasn’t been able to get it going on a consistent basis yet and the running game has provided little to no support. 

The good news is DeAndre Hopkins will be returning this week after serving his six-game suspension. His return will give Murray another receiver to throw to — in addition to the newly acquired Robbie Anderson. However, they’ll be without Hollywood Brown, who will reportedly miss around six weeks with a foot injury. 

After an 11-6 season last year, the pressure is on in Arizona to turn things around before it’s too late.

9:58 p.m. — New Orleans gets a much-needed stop on defense. Murray finds Hopkins for a short gain on 1st down, but two straight incompletions bring up 4th and 5. Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first punt of the game. 

9:57 p.m. START OF SECOND HALF — As if things couldn’t get worse for the Saints, Arizona will get the ball first to start the half. 

9:52 p.m. — The Cardinals scored three touchdowns in just 1:44 of game time. Unreal. 

9:48 p.m. — Well. In the words of Ron Burgundy, that escalated quickly. The Saints were in great shape after taking a 14-6 lead in the second quarter. But now, just ten minutes later, they trail by 14 points after a pair of brutal pick-sixes on the final two drives of the half. 

End of first half: Cardinals 28, Saints 14

9:43 p.m. — The Saints get the ball back again, and will just kneel out the half. They must be shell-shocked after what just happened in the last few minutes.

9:40 p.m. — The Cardinals go for two again, and this time they get it. Murray finds Ertz in the end zone and the try is good.

9:38 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — ANOTHER PICK-SIX. UNBELIEVABLE. Dalton wasn’t at fault on the last one, but this time he is looking for Chris Olave and simply doesn’t see Isaiah Simmons lurking in coverage. Simmons intercepts it and sprints down the right sideline for a second consecutive interception return touchdown! What a huge turnaround in the last few minutes!

9:36 p.m. — Can’t fault Dalton whatsoever on that pick-six. He threw a perfect pass that hit Callaway right in the chest. Very sloppy mistake from the third-year receiver. 

Cardinals 20, Saints 14

9:35 p.m. — Blankenship misses the extra point to keep Arizona’s lead at just 6 points. 

9:32 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — WOAH. Out of nowhere, the Cardinals have the lead! Dalton throws to Marquez Callaway and it hits the receiver right in the hands, but he can’t hang on. It deflects up into the air and into the hands of Marco Wilson, who front flips into the end zone in style of a pick-6! 

9:29 p.m. TWO-MINUTE WARNING — The Saints get the ball back, and Kamara rips off a 10-yard run on the first play of the drive. That’ll take us to the two-minute warning.

Saints 14, Cardinals 14

9:27 p.m. — Eno Benjamin takes the handoff on the two-point attempt and lunges for the end zone. The ball comes loose, but the ruling on the field is that it broke the plane. After a lengthy review, the call stands and we have a tie ballgame. 

9:22 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Keaontay Ingram plows forward and finds pay dirt! That’s the first touchdown of his NFL career. Arizona will go for two to try and tie it up.

9:21 p.m. — Arizona uses a timeout before the 1st down play. Murray went over to the sideline and looked very frustrated, getting animated in a conversation with Kingsbury. Hopkins even came over and put his arm around him to try and calm him down. Not sure what they were talking about, but this is another great opportunity to score for Arizona.

9:20 p.m. — Murray keeps it on 4th down, scrambling to his left and extending the ball over the line to gain to move the chains. Big play there. 

9:17 p.m. — Murray gets dragged down for a loss of 4 yards on 1st down, then finds Hopkins for a short gain on 2nd. On 3rd and 7, Zach Ertz makes the catch but he comes up just short of the line to gain. It looks like Kliff Kingsbury will go for it on 4th and 1 from inside the 5-yard line. 

9:15 p.m. — On 3rd and 10, the Saints think they’ve sacked Murray to bring up 4th down, but a defensive holding call bails out the Cardinals with a free first down. 

9:12 p.m. — Murray gets the ball back and quickly finds Keaontay Ingram for a nice gain of 24 yards. Two plays later, he tosses it deep right to Hopkins for 18 more yards. Cardinals’ ball at the New Orleans 30-yard line.

Saints 14, Cardinals 6

9:07 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Dalton quickly tosses it to Taysom Hill, who’s lined up as a receiver out to the right. He catches it and powers in to the end zone to extend the Saints’ lead!

9:03 p.m. — The Saints get the ball back but face a quick 3rd and 2. Dalton tosses left to Kevin White, who somehow slips past a few Cardinals defenders and tightropes down the sideline all the way to the Arizona 3-yard line! The play is reviewed to see if he stepped out earlier, but it stands. First and goal, New Orleans.

9:00 p.m. — Arizona’s red zone woes continue. They need to figure out how to turn those possessions into touchdowns. 

Saints 7, Cardinals 6

8:58 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Blankenship knocks through another one to close the gap to one point. 

8:56 p.m. — Two more plays go nowhere to bring up 3rd and goal from the 10-yard line. Murray tosses a fade into the back right corner of the end zone for Rondale Moore, but it’s incomplete. The officials called offensive pass interference, anyway. Another field goal try incoming. 

8:53 p.m. — Kyler rolls left, then tucks it and runs forward for a pickup of 11 yards to move the chains. It’ll be first and goal from about the 7-yard line.

End of first quarter: Saints 7, Cardinals 3

8:51 p.m. — The Cardinals can’t get anything on the next two plays, though. It’ll be 3rd and 10 when the second quarter begins.

8:47 p.m. — Just two plays later, Eno Benjamin breaks loose down the left sideline for a huge pickup of 45 yards! He’s finally dragged down inside the Saints’ 20-yard line to set Arizona up inside the red zone.

8:45 p.m. INTERCEPTION — What a huge mistake by Dalton! He tries to squeeze the ball in a tight window to Marquez Callaway, but Antonio Hamilton jumps the route and picks him off in the end zone! 

8:43 p.m. — New Orleans has it in the red zone after another nice run by Kamara. But after he’s smothered for a loss on 2nd down, it’ll be 3rd and 8 from about the 10-yard line. 

8:42 p.m. — On 3rd and 9, the Saints are able to convert yet again after Dalton finds Olave for 15 more yards. This has been a methodical drive, and the Cardinals’ defense just cannot get off the field.

8:39 p.m. — Another Hill sighting. This time he throws right to Kamara, who scurries for 7 more yards and another first down. 

8:37 p.m. — Taysom Hill checks in on 2nd down and runs for a short gain. On the next play, Mark Ingram powers his way up the middle for another Saints first down. 

8:35 p.m. — New Orleans faces a quick 3rd and 11 situation on the ensuing drive. Dalton scrambles to his right and fires downfield to Chris Olave, who makes the catch to pick up 15 yards and move the chains. 

8:33 p.m. — Two early injuries to report. Saints cornerback Bradley Roby and Cardinals defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence have both been carted to the locker room in the last couple minutes. Not what you want to see. 

Saints 7, Cardinals 3

8:28 p.m. FIELD GOAL — The kick is GOOD. Blankenship connects from 50 yards out on his first kick as a Cardinal. 

8:27 p.m. — But the drive stalls out. Murray finds Hopkins for his first catch this season on 2nd down, but a deep shot down the right sideline on 3rd and 5 falls incomplete. Arizona’s new kicker Rodrigo Blankenship (formerly of the Colts) will come on to try a long-ish field goal.

8:24 p.m. — Kyler Murray and the Cards get the ball for the first time tonight, and on 2nd down he goes deep for Rondale Moore to pick up 31 yards. 

8:21 p.m. — That was a stellar throw from Dalton. And how about the rookie, Shaheed? The first touch of his NFL career came last week on a 44-yard end-around play that went for a touchdown. Now, the second touch of his career is a 53-yard catch for a touchdown. Talk about a fast start. 

Saints 7, Cardinals 0

8:19 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — WOW. What a start for New Orleans! Dalton drops back on 2nd and 11 and launches it downfield for the rookie Rashid Shaheed, who hauls it in and drags a defender with him into the end zone! A 53-yard bomb to open the scoring.

8:17 p.m. — Alvin Kamara breaks loose on the second play from scrimmage for a gain of 17 yards. That’s a good early sign for Saints fans. 

8:15 p.m. — The Cardinals kick it away, and Dalton and the Saints will get the ball first to start this game. 

8:12 p.m. — Kickoff is just a few moments away from Glendale, Arizona. Week 7 starts now. 

8:01 p.m. — The Cardinals are riding an eight game home losing streak, the worst in the NFL. Will they finally be able to get a win in the desert tonight?

7:52 p.m. — Dalton is out there getting loose. No noticeable signs of the back injury that ailed him earlier this week.

7:30 p.m. — Hopkins teased his return on social media earlier today with an interesting video to mark the occasion…

7:26 p.m. — DeAndre Hopkins is BACK. He makes his return to the field tonight after serving a six game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. 

7:18 p.m. — There was some uncertainty about the Saints’ quarterback situation this week with Andy Dalton and James Winston both listed on the injury report, but it looks like Dalton will get the start under center tonight.
