Qatar and Senegal will be facing off in what should be a dramatic Group A match in which the loser could potentially be eliminated from contention by the time the day is done.

Both nations lost their opening match by a 2-0 score, though Senegal’s performance against the Netherlands was arguably deserving of a better outcome. The African champions bossed the game for large stretches, but failed to convert on their chances with the absence of injured star Sadio Mane looming large.

Host nation Qatar, meanwhile, put forth as disastrous a showing as was possible for a national team that had been preparing for over 10 years for the moment to impress the world on its own home soil. It was clear that despite all the preparation the nerves got to them and they never got in the game.

There will be no time for excuses on Friday as the World Cup fate of both teams likely comes down to their ability to get all three points.

Qatar vs Senegal live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

45+4 mins: Akram Afif has looked the most likely to make something happen for Qatar, getting into the penalty area and firing the ball across. Kalidou Koulibaly turns it behind, but that wasn’t great communication between the Senegal captain and his Chelsea teammate Edouard Mendy.

45+2 mins: Kalidou Koulibaly is brought down by a late Homam Ahmed challenge and that’s a booking all day long.

45 mins: We’re into seven minutes of stoppage time now, with the deflated hosts needing the whistle to regroup. At the moment a second Senegal goal looks more likely than a Qatar equaliser.

GOAL! 41 mins: That’s poor defending from the hosts, and they’ve been punished. Boualem Khoukhi takes a huge swing at at attempted clearance, losing his footing and presenting the ball to Boulaye Dia, who duly slots in to give Senegal the lead.

38 mins: Senegal have had several half-chances, but haven’t really done enough to look like scoring. How long will that continue?

34 mins: That’s Qatar’s best moment of the match as Akram Afif bursts into the area after a good first-time passing move and goes down under Ismaila Sarr’s challenge. The referee says no penalty, but that was a tight, tight call.

32 mins: Boulaye Dia leaves a foot in on Homam Ahmed, who falls awkwardly on to his fingers. Treatment and strapping on his left hand for the Qatar man, and a yellow card for the Senegal forward.

30 mins: Meshaal Barsham is out sharply against as Edouard Mendy’s long clearance looks for Ismaila Sarr, and the Qatar goalkeeper is fortunate there’s a teammate there to tidy up after he fails to get there first, Boualem Khoukhi heading the ball back to his goalkeeper.

29 mins: Qatar’s new goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham has shown plenty of willingness to come off his line to claim balls into his area, applying a good punch here. The ball falls to the edge of the area where Youssouf Sabaly volleys wide, although the flag is up in any case.

26 mins: Abdelkarim Hassan comes forward for Qatar and opts to try his luck from range, the ball flicking off Idrissa Gueye on its way over the bar – although no corner is awarded, much to Qatar’s annoyance.

24 mins: A change of tempo for Senegal and that’s the best moment of the match so far, Idrissa Gueye driving forward and firing just past the post from the edge of the penalty area.

22 mins: Still goalless but no shortage of noise and colour!

20 mins: Ismaeel Mohammad brings down Boulaye Dia as the Senegal forward goes down the left, and that’s the first yellow card of the contest.

17 mins: Qatar had all sorts of problems at the back in their first game, but Meshaal Barsham does well to adjust here, the replacement keeper turning behind Krepin Diatta’s deflected cross-shot from the left. He comes a long way for the resulting corner, though, and gets absolutely nowhere near it and is fortunate to see the ball flick wide off the head of Famara Diedhiou.

15 mins: The hosts have certainly started this one better than their opening fixture, and here’s their first shot of the evening. Kalidou Koulibaly rises to head away as far as Akram Afif, but he’s unable to get over the 20m volley and slices the ball high and wide.

12 mins: The Senegal game plan looks to be quite clear; get the ball out wide. The African side have managed to work a few promising crossing positions already, but without finding the quality on the final ball.

8 mins: More good work from Ismaila Sarr, who turns on the afterburners to keep the ball in down the right. His cross finds Famara Diedhiou, who takes a touch and opts to find Nampalys Mendy instead of having a go himself, and the shot is wide. Diedhiou would probably have been better trying a first-time effort.

5 mins: That’s positive from Ismaila Sarr, the Senegal winger attacking at pace down the right and breaking into the penalty area. His cross-shot looks to have deflected behind off Assim Madibo, but a goal kick is awarded, much to Sarr’s disbelief.

3 mins: Neither side able to get a sustained period of possession as yet, with both looking to get the ball forward quickly. Needs someone to put their foot on it.

KICKOFF! Qatar get us started, with neither side able to afford another defeat as they look to keep their Group A hopes alive.

10 mins to kickoff: Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has backed under pressure goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, saying: “We speak a lot, we play at the same club and we are brothers in arms for Senegal. He is a very important player for us, it is normal to go through difficult phases. 

“We are making a mountain out of a molehill here. He knows what he needs to do, the rest of the team do as well and we are going to try to put everything together to pull something out of the bag. 

“When a team loses it’s not down to one player, it’s down to the whole team. We are going to do everything we can to change this but I don’t think we should be making a big deal of this. I am not worried, I know Edouard will be on top of his game.”

20 mins to kickoff: Qatar had won five matches in a row before losing 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday, only their second defeat in their last 14 official matches. However, the Maroons are without a win in three previous home meetings with African opponents, losing twice to Algeria and drawing with Egypt. 

Midfielder Ismail Mohamad said: “We have to focus on ourselves, we want to give it our all. It is very important to be in good shape and make everyone proud. The first step we will do is to try and do that and deliver on the pitch. We will strive to make you proud, we will try our best to play at our best level to give you joy. This match will show what we are capable of.”

45 mins from kickoff: No real surprise to see a change in goal for the hosts, Saad Al-Sheeb making way for Meshaal Barsham after an erratic display against Ecuador. For Senegal, meanwhile, Edouard Mendy keeps his place between the sticks despite plenty of criticism for his part in the two Netherlands’ goals.

Also for Senegal Farmara Diedhiou replaces Cheikhou Kouyate  with Ismail Jakobs coming into defence. Iliman Ndiaye and Pape Matar Sarr are options from the bench if the game remains goalless.

Qatar manager Felix Sanchez opts to change goalkeeper, where Meshaal Barsham filld in for Saad Al-Sheeb, who struggled mightily against Ecuador.

For all his experience, playmaker Hasan Al-Haydos was another player who struggled to match the physicality and speed of the Ecuador team but he keeps his place in the starting XI.

Senegal have decided to stick with Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy in goal, although Cheikhou Kouyate is dealing with a muscle issue and starts on the bench, Farmara Diedhiou taking his place while Ismail Jakobs comes into defence.

Sheffield United’s 22-year-old Illiman Ndiaye, who has nine goals in 21 matches in the English second tier this season and was seen as a potential replacement for Sadio Mane’s do-it-all attacking influence behind the forward, is again among the substitutes.

Senegal will start the match at Al Thumama Stadium as favorites, especially after putting forth a strong performance against the Netherlands despite failing to score in a 2-0 loss. Qatar lost by the same score, but looked overwhelmed by the moment and have something to prove.
