NFL Draft rumors: Will Levis could be fit for ‘quarterback-desperate’ Colts

Where there’s smoke, there’s Will Levis.

The Kentucky product is angling to be one of the first quarterbacks off the board come April 27, sitting comfortably behind Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud.

If rumors are to be believed, he won’t have to wait long to hear his name called after the first two picks.

According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the Colts are a potential landing spot for Levis — and if not, then he might be waiting a while to hear his name called.

I heard ‘Colts, Colts, Colts’ the last few days. I put out my mock draft that had Stroud to the Colts, I had to get creative, I had them trading up for him. Now I’m hearing, if they (the Colts) don’t have Stroud, they don’t have Young, Levis seems to be a potential Colts quarterback, which to me is a lot of smoke.

But when you’re talking about a team who’s desperate for a quarterback at 4 — the Indianapolis Colts are desperate for a quarterback at 4 — Will Levis might be the guy for them.

Levis to the Colts is a fit that seemingly makes sense. After playing on the quarterback carousel since Andrew Luck retired prior to the 2019 season, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan have all taken snaps as the team’s Week 1 starter. Indy could certainly use a young, moldable passer of the future.

As it stands, free agent signing Gardner Minshew is listed as QB1 on the Colts’ depth chart, with Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger rounding out the room. Minshew would provide a comfortable buffer for any young quarterback without being a hinderance for an ascending passer.

Schrager adds that, should the Colts not be the taker for Levis, then he may be in for a long draft night, with no other top-10 selections a potential fit for the QB.

There will be at minimum two and as many as five quarterbacks taken in the first round of this year’s draft. Levis should hope that Schrager’s assessment is correct.
