NHL awards 2023: List of finalists for the Hart, Norris, Vezina & more

The 2023 NHL playoffs are in full swing and while those still in the hunt have their eyes on the Stanley Cup, there is more hardware that will be given out this season.

Beginning on Tuesday, May 2, the NHL is starting to announce the finalists for the 2023 NHL awards. The rollout will go until Friday, May 12.

Included in those honors are the Vezina, the Norris, the Hart and the Selke. There are nine major awards that the league will announce finalists for. 

The winners of the awards are going to be revealed on Monday, June 26 at the 2023 NHL Awards show in Nashville.

Here is a look at the finalists for all of the major awards.

2023 NHL Award finalists

James Norris Memorial Trophy

Finalists

  • Adam Fox, D, Rangers
  • Erik Karlsson, D, Sharks
  • Cale Makar, D, Avalanche

The finalists for the Norris Trophy were announced on Thursday, May 4. The award goes to the league’s best defenseman of the season. 

All three have previously won the Norris. Cale Makar won it in 2022, Adam Fox earned the honors in 2021 and Erik Karlsson won in 2012 and 2015. 

Calder Memorial Trophy

Finalists

  • Matty Beniers, F, Kraken
  • Owen Power, D, Sabres
  • Stuart Skinner, G, Oilers

The finalists for the Calder Trophy were announced on Wednesday, May 3. The award goes to the league’s best rookie of the season. 

Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider won the Calder in 2022. 

Frank J. Selke Trophy

Finalists

  • Patrice Bergeron, F, Bruins
  • Nico Hischier, F, Devils
  • Mitch Marner, F, Maple Leafs

The finalists for the Selke Trophy were announced on Tuesday, May 2. The award is given to the “forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game.”

Patrice Bergeron won the Selke in 2022. A win in 2023 would be his sixth career Selke. Mitch Marner and Nico Hischier have never won the award before. 

Lady Byng Memorial Trophy

Finalists

  • Jack Hughes, F, Devils
  • Anze Kopitar, F, Kings
  • Brayden Point, F, Lightning

The finalists for the Lady Byng Trophy were announced on Tuesday, May 2. This award goes to the “player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.”

A win in 2023 for Anze Kopitar would give him his second, previously winning in 2016. Jack Hughes and Brayden Point would be first-time winners.

Jets forward Kyle Connor won the award in 2022. 

Jack Adams Award

Finalists

  • Dave Hakstol, Kraken
  • Jim Montgomery, Bruins
  • Lindy Ruff, Devils

The finalists for the Jack Adams Award were announced on Friday, May 5. The award goes to the head coach who has “contributed the most to his team’s success.”

Former Flames coach Darryl Sutter won the award in 2022.

Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

Finalists

  • Clayton Keller, F, Coyotes
  • Kris Letang, D, Penguins
  • Alex Stalock, G, Blackhawks

The finalists for the Bill Masterton Trophy were announced on Tuesday, May 9. The award honors the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price won the award in 2022.

Hart Memorial Trophy

Finalists

The finalists for the Hart Trophy will be announced on Friday, May 12. The award goes to the player deemed “most valuable” to his team. 

Oilers center Connor McDavid won the Hart in 2022. 

Ted Lindsay Award

Finalists

The finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award will be announced on Wednesday, May 10. The award, named after Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay (formerly the Lester B. Pearson Award), is given annually to the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted on by his peers.

Oilers center Connor McDavid won the Ted Lindsay in 2022. 

Vezina Trophy

Finalists

The finalists for the Vezina Trophy will be announced on Thursday, May 11. The award goes to the league’s best goaltender of the season. 

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin won the Vezina in 2022.
