Why Oasis are Man City supporters: Story of how Liam and Noel Gallagher became fans of the Citizens

By | June 9, 2023

Manchester City fans will be crossing their fingers for a first ever Champions League title win as they face Inter Milan in the final on June 10.

City endured years of frustration in the 1990s, as arch rivals Manchester United dominated the early Premier League era, and they bounced between the top two tiers of English football.

However, since the 2008 Abu Dhabi backed buyout, City have been transformed into a domestic and European powerhouse, with their long suffering supporters enjoying a golden age at the Etihad Stadium.

Arguments over the authenticity of City fans, and who followed the team before their 2008 revolution have raged, but former Oasis duo Liam and Noel Gallagher can claim to have been with the club since the Maine Road days.

Why do Oasis, Gallagher brothers support Man City?

The Gallagher brothers have made no secret of their ardent support of City and their subsequent dislike of United.

The duo trace their support for the Blues back to the early 1970’s, with Noel recalling how his father took him to watch City at Maine Road, and the Oasis icon was immediately hooked.

Man United were in the Second Division back then and we were the top team in Manchester for about 10 years.

The first game my dad ever took me to was City vs Newcastle United at Maine Road in 1971. That was it — City became my team!

But over the years, when City struggled, United have become the best team in Europe, I’ve sometimes wondered why my dad brought me to Maine Road rather than Old Trafford!

Noel claims the family link towards City has a special link to his father, who went against the rest of his United supporting relations, and the two brothers followed suit.

The reason (to support City) is a family one — my dad hated his brothers. They were all Irish people, who came over and decided to support United. My dad chose City instead, just to p**s them off. No other reason than that. Liam and I should by rights have been United fans.

Despite the duo famously enduring a tense relationship since Oasis’ split in 2009, and the breakdown in their brotherly relationship, both Noel and Liam remain committed to City.

Liam has even made the bold claim that he will reach out to his brother, and push for an Oasis reunion, if City secure the Champions League title in Istanbul.

The two brothers are certain to be in attendance at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium but it is unlikely their feuding siblings will be sitting together.
