For all his affection for Manchester City as their former captain for eight seasons, Burnley boss Vincent Kompany might have hoped not to meet the reigning champions in the opening game of his current club’s Premier League season.
In his first campaign in charge, Kompany made Burnley’s relegation from the top flight at the end of the previous campaign seem a distant memory by leading the Clarets to the Championship title.
Their 6-0 defeat at City in the FA Cup in March was a rare defeat in a glorious season for Burnley, earning them an immediate return to the Premier League and Kompany his first shot at management in the division.
City were also champions with something to spare in 2022-23. Turf Moor is not a stadium teams usually relish visiting, but Burnley know it would be an upset even if they were to deny their visitors all three points as the most high-profile domestic league in the world returns.
