Is this the year the Bengals put it all together and win a Super Bowl? The roster is locked and loaded, but they might have to avoid a slow start to get there.
Cincinnati started 0-2 last season, a disappointing stretch that ultimately was no obstacle to another AFC North title. It played a role in preventing the Bengals from earning home-field advantage in later rounds of the playoffs, however, and Zac Taylor’s team ultimately came up just short on the road in the AFC Championship Game.
The AFC North figures to be even more competitive than it was last season, and the Browns are one major reason why. Cleveland might have been a playoff team last season if not for subpar quarterback play and late-game defensive lapses. Entering 2023, Deshaun Watson is available, and the defense has added veteran pieces while swapping out Joe Woods for Jim Schwartz in the defensive coordinator role.
Will that be enough to get the Browns back to the playoffs? Beating Burrow and the Bengals in Week 1 would certainly put the division on notice.
Burrow’s health could be the major storyline entering Sunday’s opener after he missed most of training camp with a calf injury. The former No. 1 pick is expected to play, but questions about rust and his mobility still need to be answered in what should be a fun AFC North battle.
