Man United vs Crystal Palace live score, updates, highlights as Garnacho, Casmiro score in EFL Cup

By | September 26, 2023

Erik ten Hag needs another positive result as Manchester United, still mired in a slump, host Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup third round on Tuesday.

The match is the first of two straight meetings between these clubs at Old Trafford, with this cup fixture coincidentally plopped just days before the two again clash on the weekend in Premier League action.

United ground out a 1-0 victory against Burnley last time out to stop a run of three straight defeats, but the optics were ugly as the Red Devils were massively out-possessed by the promoted side and struggled to create chances. The heroics of 35-year-old Jonny Evans provided a nice distraction, but simply his involvement signaled that further improvement is yet required.

Palace have not progressed past the fourth round of this competition since their semifinal appearance in 2012, so an upset here could provide a foundation for a positive run of form.

The Sporting News is following the Man United vs Crystal Palace match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Man United vs Crystal Palace live updates, highlights, commentary

Man United vs Crystal Palace: First Half

29th min: Hannibal is the second player into the book, and first Red Devil, as he hauls down a Crystal Palace player in transition, stopping a counter.

27th min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! Casemiro heads home the corner for United’s second! He’s beaten Jeffrey Schlupp in the air just next to the penalty spot!

Watch in UK:

26th min: Chance, Man United! Chris Richards makes a goal-saving tackle on Facundo Pellistri! Mason Mount somehow, amidst four Crystal Palace defenders, feeds Pellistri through vertically, but Richards slides in behind and sorts out the chance! It concedes a corner.

In the aftermath, Rob Holding is booked by the official for a foul on Anthony Martial in the buildup to the chance.

21st min: GOAL! MAN UNITED! Alejandro Garnacho, back in the Manchester United starting lineup, has found the opening goal!

Facundo Pellistri releases Diogo Dalot making a vertical run down the right, and his cross is cut back to Garnacho at the penalty spot. The Argentine slides awkwardly as he gets his leg to the ball which is sent slightly behind him, but he manages to angle his effort inside the far post!

Watch in UK:

18th min: Crystal Palace have a problem, as Dean Henderson has pulled a muscle making a goal kick, and he asks for treatment. He’ll have to come off. Sam Johnstone will enter the match in an early injury substitution.

Henderson walks off visibly frustrated. He hasn’t gotten many chances so far this year, and finally with an opportunity to see the field, he’s been forced off. A thigh injury ruled him out of preseason, and this could be a recurrence of that.

15th min: If we’re being honest, it doesn’t appear that either team has any interest in this match through the opening 15 minutes. Outside of the one Crystal Palace counter-attack, there’s been nothing in this game so far.

8th min: Look out! Harry Maguire is required as he makes a vital intervention as Crystal Palace venture forward for the first time all match. A cross from the left by Jeffrey Schlupp nearly found Jean-Philippe Mateta in front of goal but it’s blocked away at the last possible moment by Maguire’s outstretched foot.

7th min: Sofiyan Amrabat gets forward and fires a shot on goal but it’s blazed over. United have completely dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes, but have little to show for it.

Dean Henderson is being booed every time the Crystal Palace goalkeeper touches the ball.

4th min: It’s been a very sleepy start to this match. Manchester United have held most of the early possession, but have simply passed it back and forth across the top of the attacking third as they probe for an opening. Haven’t spotted anything just yet.

Kickoff: The match from Old Trafford is under way as the EFL Cup holders begin their title defence! This will be the first of two meetings between these two clubs this week at this stadium, with the two scheduled to match up again on Saturday in Premier League action.

Man United vs Crystal Palace: Pre-match commentary, analysis, stats, and more

15 mins to kickoff: Speaking prior to the match today, Erik ten Hag made it known he has fond memories from winning the EFL Cup last year, and therefore hasn’t completely rotated his side knowing this competition provides an opportunity for a trophy when other doors may close.

30 mins to kickoff: Today’s official is Michael Salisbury, who is a fringe Premier League referee who has taken charge of two top flight matches so far this year after logging 15 last season. He also works Championship and League One games, and handled the EFL Cup second round match between Stoke and Rotherham, while also serving as fourth official for last weekend’s North London derby.

Salisbury is quite lenient, especially by this season’s standards, dishing out six yellow cards across his two Premier League appearances this year. He was at the centre of an early season controversy and saw no assignments in the aftermath as a result.

45 mins to kickoff: The oddest lineup quirk of the day is new Manchester United signing Sofiyan Amrabat, in his first Old Trafford start, at left-back. With multiple injuries to the Man United full-back ranks, Amrabat has been forced to deputise along the back, but he has played there before under Erik ten Hag when the two were both at Dutch side FC Utrecht.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in, and Erik ten Hag has made a number of rotational changes, but not completely altered his side. Casemiro and Andre Onana retain their places, while Hannibal Mejbrj is deployed yet again. Mason Mount makes his return from injury, and…is that Sofiyan Amrabat at full-back?

For Crystal Palace, American defender Chris Richards is indeed introduced as speculated earlier, while Dean Henderson is deployed against his former club. 20-year-old winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi starts for the Eagles, with the aforementioned Ademola Ola-Adebomi available off the bench.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: One report ahead of kickoff has stated that 20-year-old Ademola Ola-Adebomi will be included in Crystal Palace’s matchday squad for the first time today, although it’s unclear whether he will start or come off the bench. Ola-Adebomi has 11 goals for Crystal Palace’s U-21 squad last season, and has trained with the first team on a number of occasions this year.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Crystal Palace have failed to score in five of their last seven League Cup matches, but the last two times they’ve faced the defending title winners in this competition, they’ve knocked the holders out.

They also advanced last time they drew Manchester United in the EFL Cup, winning 2-1 in extra time back in the 2011 quarterfinals. Could history be on the Eagles’ side today?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Erik ten Hag has held firm in his standoff with winger Jadon Sancho. While this match might normally be an opportunity for the young English star to get back in the manager’s good graces, ten Hag has indicated he will not allow Sancho back into the fold unless he apologises for his transgressions.

2 hours to kickoff: Domestic cup fixtures often provide an opportunity for young players to impress and earn time in the future, and that’s likely the case for Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards today. The young American has been forced to feed on scraps at the Premier League club, but his 90 minutes in the 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa drew widespread praise despite conceding a dubious penalty.

With Marc Guehi only recently recovered from an injury and Joachim Andersen one of the club’s most important players, it’s likely that Richards gets another look today and he remains an important part of the club’s future plans as well. While he continues to start for the U.S. national team and figures to be a significant contributor over the coming World Cup cycle, Richards will have to bide his time at club level, but a performance today could go a long way in that regard.

Man United vs Crystal Palace lineups & team news

The Red Devils badly need a positive string of results to turn the narrative, and thus Erik ten Hag would likely be tempted not to rotate the side even given the chance to, but with all the injuries in the Man United squad, the manager may not have the players for many changes anyways.

The defensive unit is hardest hit, with Lisandro Martinez suffering a setback in his recovery, while Aaron Wan-BissakaLuke Shaw, and Tyrell Malacia remain sidelined. Loan signing Sergio Reguilon played despite illness against Burnley and will likely be needed again here. There is hope, however, as Harry Maguire is likely to return and Raphael Varane has also been reintroduced into the squad.

Mason Mount is also back in training and could make the matchday squad, but Jadon Sancho and Antony remain out of the fold due to their off-the-field issues. It’s possible that promising youngsters Alejandro GarnachoFacundo Pellistri, and Hannibal Mejbri could be involved, but Kobbie Mainoo misses this opportunity for minutes due to injury.

Man United starting lineup (4-1-4-1): Onana (GK) — Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Amrabat — Casemiro — Pellistri, Hannibal, Mount, Garnacho — Martial.

Man United subs (9): Bayindir (GK), Heaton (GK), Lindelof, Evans, van de Beek, Gore, Fernandes, Rashford, Hojlund.

With Crystal Palace only managing domestic fixtures this season, there’s less of a reason for manager Roy Hodgson to fully rotate his squad, but a few players could see time.

Chief amongst those pushing for a start is American centre-back Chris Richards, who has been starved for time behind regular duo Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi but impressed with 90 minutes against Aston Villa earlier this month. Rob Holding could also get a nod here alongside the U.S. international, while Hodgson could turn to Dean Henderson in goal for a cup role against his former club.

Michael Olise is out for a number of weeks with a hamstring injury, while Naouirou Ahamada picked up an ankle injury in training and could be sidelined. Jefferson Lerma could return soon but his status remains unclear, while the same can be said for Matheus Franca and James Tomkins.

Crystal Palace starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Henderson (GK) — Clyne, Richards, Holding, Mitchell — Riedewald, Doucoure — J. Ayew, Rak-Sakyi, Schlupp — Mateta.

Crystal Palace subs (9): Johnstone (GK), Ward, Guehi, Andersen, Hughes, Ozoh, Eze, Ebiowei, Ola-Adebomi.
