Notre Dame vs. Duke live score, updates, highlights from Week 5 college football game

By | September 30, 2023

After a heartbreaking loss last week, Notre Dame is heading to Durham to duke it out with the Blue Devils. College GameDay will join the fun in Durham for the first time.

Duke is ranked the highest its been since 1994 at No. 17. It’s transformed from a 3-9 team in 2021 to an undefeated one, starting the season 4-0 under second-year coach Mike Elko. A win against typical ACC powerhouse Clemson sparked what could be an exciting season for Blue Devils. It’s quite a change to fans, who have long turned to basketball to ease the pain of their football team.

The Irish need to get back on track if they want any hope at making the playoffs now. Their last-second loss to Ohio State with only 10 players on the field shocked the football world and left fans questioning Notre Dame’s return to the top.

The miscommunication displayed by Notre Dame should not be happening if it wants be a playoff team. A solid win on the road would help keep it in the picture. Thing is, the same 10-man defense accident happened earlier in the season against Tennessee State but without scoring consequence. It was due to happen when the Irish ultimately faced an elite team.

Defense will really be the name of the game, as Duke has one of the best in the country. It hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in any game; only three teams have allowed fewer points. It also comes third in passing yards allowed with 143.3 yards per game. The Blue Devil defenders have their work cut out for them in Sam Hartman, though. The Irish QB has 14 touchdowns with no interceptions through four games. Still, Duke will need to convert. It’s won every game by at least 21 points, but Riley Leonard has only two passing touchdowns throughout those four games.

Notre Dame won the latest matchup in 2020, but this will be the first time Elko and Marcus Freeman have faced each other.
