Penn State vs. Ohio State live score, updates, highlights from 2023 college football rivalry game

By | October 21, 2023

Ohio State came into the 2023 season with three massive tests on its schedule: A Week 4 matchup with Notre Dame, a Week 8 showdown with Penn State and a Week 13 rivalry game with Michigan.

The Buckeyes narrowly survived the first test, knocking off Notre Dame with a second left on the clock, and the next major challenge comes on Saturday when Ohio State squares off with the rival Nittany Lions.

Penn State has rolled to a 6-0 start and arguably has more NFL-caliber talent on its roster than at any other point in the James Franklin era. With promising sophomore Drew Allar at quarterback, the Nittany Lions are hoping this is the year they can break through and reach the College Football Playoff. That might not happen without a win in Columbus on Saturday.

Ohio State has a perfect record as well, but the Buckeyes haven’t looked untouchable. Even aside from the win over Notre Dame, Ryan Day’s team started slowly against both Maryland and Indiana. The margin for error will be smaller against a Penn State team looking to pounce.

Franklin is 1-8 against Ohio State since he was hired in State College. If Penn State can leave Columbus with a win on Saturday, that record, at least for the time being, will be forgotten.

Penn State vs. Ohio State live updates, highlights from Week 8 game

(All times Eastern)

End of third quarter: Ohio State 10, Penn State 6

2:47 p.m. β€” What a HUGE break for the Nittany Lions. Their punt bounces off an Ohio State returner, and Penn State recovers near midfield. Wow.

2:45 p.m. β€” Penn State opts to throw it on 3rd & 1, which just seems like a mindless decision with the way this game has been going for Allar. It’s not Allar’s fault, as his pass behind the line of scrimmage was dropped, but that’s the risk you take when you pass the ball.

2:44 p.m. β€” The Buckeyes are stopped on 4th & Goal. Wow. Now the pressure is on Penn State’s offense to get some breathing room and put together a lengthy drive.

2:42 p.m. β€” What a huge play by Penn State’s defense to drop Miyan Williams for a loss at the goal line. Ohio State appears to be going for it on fourth down rather than taking the easy field goal.

2:38 p.m. β€” Ohio State backup QB Devin Brown is down on the field after taking the Buckeyes down to the one-yard line.

2:36 p.m. β€” Ohio State is set up 10 yards from the goal line after a huge 29-yard completion to Cade Stover.

2:35 p.m. β€” Marvin Harrison Jr. continues to look like the best player on the field as he picks up another 16 yards to take Ohio State into Penn State territory.

2:32 p.m. β€” Allar just does not have it today. He’s 8-of-20 after his pass hung up in the air way too long on third down. Penn State will punt again.

2:31 p.m. β€” Penn State faces a critical 3rd & 8, looking to avoid dropping to 0/9 on third down today.

2:27 p.m. β€” Even without Chop Robinson, Penn State’s defense is just manhandling Ohio State right now. The Buckeyes punt from their own end zone, but it takes a big bounce to avoid Penn State getting strong field position.

2:25 p.m. β€” After a holding penalty sets the Buckeyes back, McCord gets sacked just a few yards in front of the end zone. It’s 3rd & 27 for Ohio State.

2:22 p.m. β€” McCord with a key third down conversion to Harrison. Penn State hasn’t converted a single third down today, so the Buckeyes’ ability to at least do a little something on third down has been a difference-maker.

2:18 p.m. β€” Penn State’s drive comes to a quick end after Singleton is dropped for a three-yard loss on third down. More of the same from these two struggling offenses.

2:14 p.m. β€” A really nice job by the Penn State defense to put that drive to rest quickly and force a three-and-out. Ohio State ran out the clock at the end of the first half knowing it would get the ball out of halftime, and the Buckeyes can’t capitalize.

End of first half: Ohio State 10, Penn State 6

1:51 p.m. β€” Ohio State kneels to run out the clock and head to halftime. That’s an interesting call with timeouts in hand. The Buckeyes will start the second half with the ball.

1:48 p.m. β€” Penn State picks up a couple first downs, but the field position was so poor that they can’t do anything with it. The Nittany Lions will punt with under a minute remaining in the half.

1:44 p.m. β€” Ohio State can’t come up with anything after Harrison’s catch, so Penn State will get another chance before halftime (albeit with brutal field position). McCord, meanwhile, has completed only six of his last 16 pass attempts.

1:41 p.m. β€” Marvin Harrison Jr. instantly ignites the drive with a 35-yard catch. He and McCord haven’t been on the same page at times, but Harrison is up to 75 yards on five catches.

Ohio State 10, Penn State 6

1:36 p.m. FIELD GOAL β€” The drive quickly fizzles out, but Alex Felkins makes his second field goal of the day to cut Ohio State’s lead to four. This next drive will be a critical one for Penn State’s defense, considering the Buckeyes also start the second half with the ball.

1:33 p.m. β€” For the first time today, Penn State’s passing game is gaining momentum. Theo Johnson follows up Warren’s catch with a 34-yard gain. The Nittany Lions are well into Buckeyes territory.

1:32 p.m. β€” Really nice effort by Tyler Warren to stay on his feet and get a first down for Penn State.

Ohio State 10, Penn State 3

1:25 p.m. TOUCHDOWN β€” Miyan Williams stays on his feet and reaches over the goal line for Ohio State’s first touchdown of the game. The defensive holding call winds up resulting in a 14-point swing.

1:24 p.m. β€” ANOTHER penalty by Penn State. The Nittany Lions are shooting themselves in the foot over and over.

1:23 p.m. β€” It’s been one step forward and two steps back for Penn State on this drive. After stuffing Miyan Williams twice, they allow a first down catch by Marvin Harrison Jr. and commit pass interference on the play. Meanwhile, Chop Robinson is headed to the locker room on a cart.

1:20 p.m. β€” That was a bad, bad, bad sequence for Penn State, as a strip sack run all the way back for a touchdown is erased by a defensive holding penalty. That could be a 14-point swing.

1:18 p.m. β€” Ohio State gets hit with an illegal substitution penalty right out of the injury timeout.

1:17 p.m. β€” Robinson appears to be in pretty significant pain and was down on the field for a handful of minutes. He’s helped to the sideline.

1:13 p.m. β€” The Buckeyes are on the verge of the red zone, but the two teams will take an injury timeout with Penn State DE Chop Robinson down.

1:11 p.m. β€” Ohio State has taken the ball out of McCord’s hands a bit on this drive, opening with four consecutive runs to enter Penn State territory.

1:08 p.m. β€” That was quick. Penn State gains four yards on its latest drive and immediately punts the ball back to the Buckeyes. Allar is 3-of-10 for just 31 yards.

1:02 p.m. β€” McCord can’t build any momentum, and Ohio State will punt again. He’s just 3-of-10 since starting the game 5-of-5.

End of first quarter: Penn State 3, Ohio State 3

12:59 p.m. β€” McCord, trying to find his rhythm, hits Carnell Tate for a 15-yard gain to give the Buckeyes some breathing room.

12:58 p.m. β€” Penn State punts it away, and that entire sequence was tough to watch if you’re a Nittany Lions fan.

12:56 p.m. β€” The Nittany Lions strangely opt to throw it on 3rd & 1, and Allar simply misses the throw. Decision time for James Franklin after a timeout.

12:52 p.m. β€” Penn State’s defense comes up with a critical tackle on third down and forces Ohio State’s second punt of the day.

12:51 p.m. β€” McCord has thrown six consecutive incompletions, including some missed opportunities with Marvin Harrison Jr.

12:50 p.m. β€” Miyan Williams with a nice run for the first down to give Ohio State some breathing room.

Penn State 3, Ohio State 3

12:44 p.m. FIELD GOAL β€” Alex Felkins’ 40-yard attempt is good. Penn State ties it at three.

12:43 p.m. β€” Penn State essentially plays for a field goal, or maybe a close fourth down, on 3rd & 13 by handing off to Singleton. It’ll be a field goal try.

12:41 p.m. β€” Singleton just racked up 35 yards in two plays. He’s pushed the Nittany Lions deep into Ohio State territory.

12:40 p.m. β€” Penn State gets its running game going with a 20-yard run by Nicholas Singleton.

12:35 p.m. β€” Penn State’s defense has looked much more confident since this opening plays. The Nittany Lions sack McCord on third down to force Ohio State’s first punt of the day.

12:30 p.m. β€” Allar badly underthrows a third down pass, and Penn State will punt for the second time today.

12:28 p.m. β€” Allar’s first completion is a first down catch by Harrison Wallace III.

Ohio State 3, Penn State 0

12:24 p.m. FIELD GOAL β€” Penn State’s pass defense tightened the screws as soon as Ohio State entered field goal range, forcing McCord’s first three incompletions. The Buckeyes still draw first blood with a field goal.

12:22 p.m. β€” Nice catch-and-run by Chip Trayanum to take Ohio State into the red zone already.

12:21 p.m. β€” Two catches, two first downs for Harrison as the Buckeyes convert on 3rd & 3.

12:19 p.m. β€” Kyle McCord hits Marvin Harrison Jr. immediately for a first down.

12:17 p.m. β€” It took the Buckeyes just 28 seconds to get Penn State’s offense off the field. The Nittany Lions will punt after back-to-back incompletions from Allar.

12:15 p.m. β€” And we’re off! Drew Allar and Penn State start with the ball. An immediate test for the 19-year-old.

12:11 p.m. β€” They’re ready in Columbus.

12:07 p.m. β€” A 12 p.m. start time is much more like a 12:15 p.m. start time in Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” game. Ohio State is just coming out of the tunnel now.

12:03 p.m. β€” Ohio State RB TreVeyeon Henderson is not expected to play today, and the status of WR Emeka Egbuka remains uncertain with kickoff minutes away.

11:58 a.m. β€” Lee Corso is rolling with the Buckeyes to stay unbeaten.

11:40 a.m. β€” ESPN’s College GameDay is in Columbus, and Buckeyes fans showed out. Will Lee Corso go with the home team?

11:23 a.m. β€” Penn State’s last win in Columbus came in 2011, when both programs were in disarray. A victory today would be a monumental step for James Franklin.

11:11 a.m. β€” It feels like someone will have a season-defining game today. Will it be Drew Allar, or will Marvin Harrison Jr. shine against one of the Big Ten’s best teams?
