Mortal Kombat 1’s Thanksgiving Fatality Is One of the Grossest in the Franchise’s Gory History

By | November 10, 2023

With the holiday season underway, NetherRealm Studios is joining in on the festivities with some holiday Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalities, including a Thanksgiving-themed one. It, like every other Fatality, is pretty gory, but that might not be what grosses you out about it.

It’s not out yet officially, but X/Twitter user @thethiny managed to datamine it, and it’s already getting pretty visceral reactions. If you’ve got a strong stomach, you can watch it below. (Warning: It’s quite graphic and may leave you feeling nauseous, especially if you’re squeamish about vomit).

Basically, it’s pretty gnarly, as the character is shown getting their pummeled face forcibly stuffed with typical foods you’d consume at a Thanksgiving dinner — turkey, sweet potato pie, and green bean casserole. Their opponent then, however, jumps on their gut, forcing them to vomit it all out along with their eyes and brain exploding out their head.

While Mortal Kombat is known for its brutal Fatalities – that’s kind of the point, after all – fans are pretty stunned at the gross-out factor of this one. They quickly took to social media to share their disbelief and/or disgust, with @LeonHartEx writing on X/Twitter, “that thanksgiving fatality is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen.”

“I’m going back to English class bc I do not have necessary vocabulary to describe what I’m feeling,” agreed @millawanda.

Others, though, are less grossed-out, with one person even noting that they’ve had worse Thanksgiving dinners. And as @junior_beasley points out, that’s just what happens when you overstuff yourself at Thanksgiving, right?

The Thanksgiving Fatality is releasing next week, released as something of an apology to players who were angry about the $10 Halloween Fatality. That and another Fatality will be “free” to those who bought the Halloween Fatality. Everyone else can buy the Seasonal Fatalities bundle sometime next week.

In our review of Mortal Kombat 1, we said, “[t]he bone-crunching gameplay of Mortal Kombat 1 is some of the best the series has ever seen, thanks to the game-changing Kameo system. Netherrealm delivers a fantastic single-player story mode as well. However, the new Invasions mode is a grind, and the online options feel dated.”
