The NFL’s inaugural Black Friday game features the AFC East leader, but that might not be the team the league expected to be in better position at this point in the season.
Aaron Rodgers was originally intended to be one of the main attractions of this divisional battle, but his Week 1 Achilles tear has thrown the Jets’ quarterback room into disarray. After weeks of struggles for Zach Wilson, New York changed course on Monday and benched Wilson for Tim Boyle.
Boyle will have his hands full on Friday. While the Jets’ hope is that he can get the ball out quicker and cut down on mistakes, the career backup is facing a Dolphins defense that has looked improved since Jalen Ramsey returned from injury. Miami’s offense has the potential to put points on the board quickly, and it will be up to Boyle behind a depleted offensive line to keep up.

Miami has looked a bit rusty offensively in recent games, including last week’s 20-13 win over the Raiders. The health of RB De’Von Achane is key, as the rookie aggravated a knee injury last week and enters Friday questionable. Against a tough Jets pass defense, Tua Tagovailoa might have to rely on the running game even more.
As talented as the Jets’ defense is, the biggest question surrounding the unit is how long a high level of play is sustainable. The defense started to show some cracks in Buffalo last week, appearing worn down as the offense struggled to stay on the field and give the unit any rest. If New York can’t sustain drives on Friday, the Dolphins could look to simply wear down a tired defense.

Jets vs. Dolphins live updates, results, highlights from NFL Black Friday game
(All times Eastern)
3:36 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Saunders opens the scoring with an inch-perfect 38-yarder in the first quarter’s waning moments.
Dolphins 3, Jets 0
3:34 p.m.: Jets defense firms up as the Dolphins skip towards their end zone once more. C.J. Mosley bats away Tagovailoa’s toss to Durham Smythe on third down. McDaniel will settle for the field goal this time around; Jason Saunders is strutting on the field.
3:30 p.m.: Boyle’s reprise comes up empty; New York gives the ball back after gaining minimal yardage on three plays. Miami is back on the prowl.
3:24 p.m.: TURNOVER ON DOWNS! It looked as if Hill had found the end zone on the fade route. But Sauce Gardner swept through the mist as Cheetah attempted to reel the pass in, deflecting it away. Big stop from New York there.
3:21 p.m.: Hill looked right at home on the ensuing play, fielding a screen pass and taking it some 17 yards to breach into the red zone.
3:18 p.m.: Tyreek Hill bursts beyond D.J. Reed and picks up 35 yards on the streak play. However, his leg got caught in the turf as he was brought down, prompting him to limp off the field. Looks like he’s back now, after the medical team tended to his knee.
3:11 p.m.: Quinnen Williams extends his tackle for loss streak on the first play from scrimmage, gobbling up Raheem Mostert. Unfortunately for Gang Green, Quinton Jefferson delivers a head butt (or maybe more of a love tap) that draws a 15-yard unnecessary roughness call.
3:06 p.m.: The duality of man for Boyle, who fires an arrow to Jason Brownlee on his first throw of the game, then sails his effort to tight end Jeremy Ruckett wide.
New York’s opening drive turns to ashes. Tua and Co. set to trot onto the ballroom.
3:03 p.m.: The ball is kicked off and away we go! Tim Boyle and the Jets will start the dance from their own 25!
2:50 p.m.: Shordy in love with my drip, I get the drip you get drip!!! Mike McDaniel struts into the matchup with one of the best outfits imaginable.
