GTA 6 Surpasses Minecraft to Become Second Most-Watched Video Game Trailer, Surprising Number 1 Still Out of Reach

By | January 17, 2024

GTA 6’s debut trailer quickly overtook the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 but has now overtaken Minecraft to become the second most-watched video game trailer of all time. The GTA 6 trailer is still far from the top spot though, which is held by a rather surprising title.

The GTA 6 trailer published on December 4, 2023 now has more than 168 million views, or 168,609,505 to be specific. Minecraft’s trailer, which was published more than a decade before GTA 6’s on December 6, 2011, has 167,800,171.

This puts GTA 6, which is set to launch on consoles in 2025, as the second most-watched video game trailer also above the likes of Clash of Clans, Team Fortress 2, and its own predecessor Grand Theft Auto 5.

But the GTA 6 trailer isn’t even half way to overcoming the number one most-viewed game trailer, however. That record belongs to a 2012 mobile endless runner called Subway Surfers. “Dash as fast as you can! Dodge the oncoming trains! Help Jake, Tricky, and Fresh escape from the grumpy Inspector and his dog,” reads its official synopsis.

Perhaps this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Subway Surfers is one of the most-popular games of all time, with over four billion downloads. Subway Surfers was the fifth most-popular Android game as of August 2023 though, and its trailer’s ranking is even more impressive. Published in 2012, the trailer has more than 361 million views. Perhaps by the time GTA 6 comes out at some point in 2025, its debut trailer will be number one.

The GTA 6 trailer — which reintroduces fans to Rockstar’s take on Miami, Vice City — featured a ton of intricate details (here are 99 things IGN spotted) and plenty of references to wild and wacky real life events too.

While the game was revealed alongside the 2025 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, PC players were left frustrated, though not necessarily surprised, that their platform was left off the list.

They weren’t the ones a little peeved though, as several developers from Rockstar itself took to social media to express their frustration at the trailer leaking early. In fact, the entire industry shared their disappointment that the exciting moment was dampened. Several streamers were also hit with content strikes and takedowns in the wake of the leak.
