C.J. Stroud contract breakdown: How much money is Texans quarterback making in 2024?

By | January 18, 2024

Texans rookie C.J. Stroud has burst onto the scene in his first NFL season, making his case as the franchise quarterback in Houston.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Stroud didn’t face any lofty expectations in Year 1. He stepped into a team that finished with the second-worst record in the NFL last season.

But while the Texans were only projected to win six games in 2023 according to Las Vegas. Stroud & Co. demolished that projection, finishing 10-7 to win the AFC South and clinch a home playoff game.

Stroud threw for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions during the regular season, closing the year as the frontrunner to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. He didn’t shy away from the spotlight in the playoffs, breaking rookie records on his way to throwing for 274 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions in a win over the Browns.

Stroud now prepares for his toughest test yet in a matchup against the No. 1 seed Ravens in the AFC divisional round. What does the rookie quarterback’s contract look like after a successful first season?

C.J. Stroud contract details

Since rookie contracts are determined by draft order, Stroud did not have to negotiate his first NFL deal. All rookie contracts are four years long, and first-round picks have a fifth-year team option that must be decided going into the player’s fourth season.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft signed a four-year, $36.3 million fully guaranteed contract with the Texans in July. His rookie deal also included a $23.38 million signing bonus.

In the 2024 season, Stroud is only making $750,000 on salary but his signing bonus takes him to $24.1 million earned.

Houston has its franchise quarterback locked up through the 2026 season and, assuming he continues to play at this elite level, it is a safe bet it picks up his option for the 2027 season as well.
