Detroit Lions, Jared Goff not close to contract extension, per report

As the Detroit Lions locked up a pair of franchise cornerstones Wednesday in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and right tackle Penei Sewell, fans and media are wondering who’s next.

The most logical choice would be quarterback Jared Goff, who recently said that he and the Lions have talked about a contract extension this offseason. But while that’s all well and good, there is reportedly no deal “imminent” at this time.

That comes from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who notes that while the two sides have indeed discussed a deal this offseason, “no deal is close at this time.”

“There’s been discussions (about a contract extension), but I’ll leave it at that,” Goff said last week, per Colton Pouncey of The Athletic.

Based on how much he’s helped revive the franchise in recent years, moving forward with Goff for the long haul certainly makes sense, but at what price?

A report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has suggested that Goff could get a massive bag that pays him anywhere from $45-$50 million annually. It remains to be seen if the Lions are willing to pay that much, though.
