What is the ‘Harry Kane curse’? England and Bayern Munich star’s unwanted trophy and final record for club and country

By | July 14, 2024

England captain Harry Kane has suffered another final defeat, as Gareth Southgate’s side lost out to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

Despite leading the Three Lions into battle in Berlin, the experienced striker was forced off in the closing stages of the final, with concerns over his fitness to complete 90 minutes following a largely uninspiring tournament for the Bayern Munich man.

The frustration for England was clear to see, with Kane and the majority of the squad losing a second successive European final after similar heartbreak at Euro 2020 against Italy.

Defeat in the latest final caps a difficult 12 months for Kane, after he failed to win a major title in his first season at German giants Bayern Munich.

What is the ‘Harry Kane curse’?

Kane’s Premier League goal scoring record was formidable prior to his decision to leave Tottenham for Bayern Munich ahead of the 2023/24 season.

He left North London as the club’s record goal scorer, with his 213 Premier League goals placing him second on the competition’s all-time list behind Alan Shearer (260).

However, despite his prolific record in front of goal, he failed to win a trophy at Tottenham, which led to speculation over the “Kane Curse” being a real thing.

With Bayern ending their run of 11 successive Bundesliga titles in 2024, as Bayer Leverkusen stormed to their first-ever title win, fans were concerned that Kane had brought his inability to win trophies with him to Bavaria.

And now England fans may be wondering the same thing.

Harry Kane’s trophy record

Kane has developed a reputation as a “nearly man” at the highest level, with three finals lost at Tottenham and two with England.

After defeat in the Euro 2024 final, his trophy record remains at zero, as he prepares for the new campaign in Munich.

He scored 44 goals in 45 games for Bayern Munich in his first campaign in Germany. Their 2024/25 season starts on August 24 at Wolfsburg.

Harry Kane’s final record

Kane lost out in two EFL Cup finals during his time at Tottenham and suffered defeat in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final to Liverpool.

Defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020 (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and the final of Euro 2024 makes it five final losses for Kane in major competitions.
