Desperate Nuggets could trade for $138 million scorer and former All-Star

The Denver Nuggets are in a tough spot. They have started the season 2-2 and look incredibly disappointing after being billed as one of the best teams in the Western Conference.

Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić has already begun expressing frustration, namely regarding the Nuggets’ poor shooting, and it’s clear that their offense is not built for success. Denver added Russell Westbrook, or whatever is left of him, in free agency this season — but so far the nine-time All-Star has been nearly unplayable

As Denver navigates a difficult start to the season, the Nuggets could turn to a blockbuster trade to bolster their chances of making a playoff run. With four players, Jokić, Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. all on big contracts, Denver will have to trade one of their best players to add a quality starter.

Denver is 14th in 3-point percentage (35.8%) and 26th in attempts per game (30) so adding a volume scorer next to Murray in the backcourt makes sense. With Jokić usually running the show as a primary facilitator, adding a slasher and shooter who can get open without the ball in his hands is a priority. In theory, Denver could trade Porter Jr. and Zeke Nnaji to the Chicago Bulls for Zach LaVine.

LaVine, since coming to Chicago in 2017, has made two All-Star games and has averaged 24.2 points, 4.3 assists and has shot 38.4% from three. He can facilitate, although Jokić and Murray would remain primary ball-handlers, and score from anywhere. Still, he would become the third option on offense for the first time in his career.

This move would signal utter desperation from Denver’s front office, although the Bulls have been desperate for the better part of two years to trade away their former franchise player, who is under contract through the 2026-27 season.
