After finding themselves on the precipice of CONCACAF glory a year ago, Canada hope to get over the hump and dethrone three-time defending champions United States as they embark on the Nations League bracket this November.
Les Rouges fell to the U.S. in the 2022/23 Nations League final, beaten on a pair of first-half goals in Las Vegas.
After being bounced by Jamaica in the quarterfinals of the most recent Nations League tournament, Canada are now matched up against Suriname in the same stage, set to play a pair of matches hoping to emerge with an aggregate victory.
The first game will be on the road in the Caribbean nation’s capital on Friday, with a return leg to come the following Tuesday in Toronto.

Suriname vs. Canada lineups & team news
A quick review of the Suriname roster will draw notice to a number of players with Netherlands descent, thanks to Suriname’s roots as a former Dutch colony. Chief amongst them is Dutch-born forward Sheraldo Becker who has been a key member of the national setup over the last two years and moved to La Liga side Real Sociedad this summer after a five-year stint with Union Berlin.
They are captained by Hammarby defender Shaquille Pinas while their appearance leader is striker Gleofilo Vlijter who plays for Serbian side OFK Beograd. Vlijter has 15 goals in 24 international appearances, including a key strike against Costa Rica in a 1-1 draw that helped them through to their first-ever Nations League quarterfinal appearance.
Surprisingly, defender/midfielder Dion Malone, who plays for Cypriot club Karmiotissa, was dropped despite playing the full 90 minutes in both their last two Nations League matches.
Suriname projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Vaessen (GK) — van Gelderen, Abena, Pinas, Haps — R. Vlijter, Paal — Becker, Pherai, Misidjan — G. Vlijter.
The biggest bit of team news for Canada is the surprise absence of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, who withdrew from the squad on Monday due to what the federation called “physical fatigue” and “exhaustion,” replaced by Sam Adekugbe. It’s a disappointing turn of events for a player who could have been rested in either September or October friendlies but played the full 90 minutes in all three games.
Also unavailable is forward Lucas Cavallini who tore his ACL back in August.
Hoping to make his first Canada international appearance is 19-year-old defender Jamie Knight-Lebel who has helped Crewe Alexandra to a promotion challenge early in the League Two season. He was an unused substitute in the Panama friendly last month after being brought in for his first senior camp.
Canada projected starting lineup (4-4-2): Crepeau (GK) — Laryea, Bombito, Cornelius, Davies — Ahmed, Eustaquio, Choiniere, Shaffelburg — David, Larin.
Suriname vs. Canada prediction, betting odds & lines
- Score prediction: Suriname 0-1 Canada
A road match in CONCACAF play is never an easy task, but Canada should have the discipline to see out a hard-fought win in this first leg, even in the absence of game-breaker Alphonso Davies.
Still, they will have to be wary of the attacking presence Suriname possess, having put up nine goals in their four Nations League qualifiers, including a 1-1 draw with Costa Rica and a 5-1 clinching win against Guyana.
