Texas’s head football coach Steve Sarkisian issues blunt, confident response to Lane Kiffin’s ‘some coaches would avoid the SEC championship’ comment

When Paul Finebaum asked Texas’s Steve Sarkisian for his thoughts on Lane Kiffin’s “They don’t want to be in it [the SEC Championship]” comment the Longhorns head football coach had just one thing to communicate.

He had confidence in his program, showing glimmering hope of winning the SEC championship this season.

“I think maybe some conferences are different than the others,” Sarkisian said on the Paul Finebaum Show. “I would like to think that the committee, when they see, ‘Hey, you’re one of the final two teams here in Atlanta playing for an SEC championship,’ that you’re not going to get punished for playing in that game. That you’re playing is obviously a very quality opponent. Your strength and schedule just shot through the roof, whether you win it or not.

“I think the challenge is, we thought about it and everybody is thinking about it strategically, is that if you go in this game and you don’t win. Now you gotta turn around and play in whatever it is, a couple weeks, or ten days. So if you go to the game, you better make sure you try and win the game so you get that bye in the first round. I think there are a lot of strategies involved, but I would think Lane would be the first one to tell you if he had an opportunity to win an SEC championship, he would go for it like all of us would. It would mean a ton,” Sarkisian added, even chipping in an honest opinion for his friend Kiffin.

Caveat in Texas going to the SEC Championship Game

Texas’s spot in the SEC Championship is still not ironclad. To secure it, Texas will first need to secure a win against Texas A&M.

Until then, Sark needs to tackle all this while handling their internal Quinn Ewers- Arch Manning raging debate.
