The Boston Red Sox had a pretty consistent booth for the first part of the century with Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy holding things down for NESN on their television broadcasts.
MLB Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley joined the two before the Red Sox booted Orsillo, who landed with the San Diego Padres, in favor of Dave O’Brien. Since Remy’s passing in 2021, the color commentary seat has been a revolving door of guests, including Kevin Youkilis, Lou Merloni, Will Middlesbrooks, Kevin Millar, Tony Massarotti and Ellis Burks.
The radio team on WEEI has mainly consisted of Joe Castiglione, Will Flemming, Sean McDonough and Merloni for the last few years.
However, in 2025 things are changing.
According to MassLive’s Sean McAdam, Merloni will serve as the team’s color broadcaster on TV for more than half of the games, taking over for Youkilis, whose contract as the team’s primary color broadcaster reportedly expired after 2024.
With Castiglione retiring, Flemming will take over as the team’s primary play-by-play voice on the radio. McAdam reports that there’s no clear answer on the color side of the radio broadcast, but Merloni and Middlebrooks may end up doing a good portion of the games.
Both Merloni and Flemming are fan favorites, so it’s great to see them thrust into more prominent roles.
