The annual coaching carousel is now in full swing. Programs like the Miami Hurricanes and Utah Utes have already found their guys before the season’s end. However, the Indiana Hoosiers find themselves in a unique position. Mike Woodson is still the head coach of the university, but it’s widely known that he will not be at the helm by the end of the season, whenever that may come.
At the beginning of February, it was announced that the Hoosiers were in discussions with Woodson about his desire to step away from the program. This came after a rough stretch of games where it seemed like the fans were no longer in his corner.
With rumored candidates on the table, it’s time to take a closer look at a potential target. Robbie Hummel, a former Purdue player, believes that Indiana should pursue Creighton’s Greg McDermott. Here is Hummel’s reasoning behind why he thinks the Hoosiers should ink a deal with McDermott:
“I like [Greg] McDermott,” Hummel stated. “And maybe that’s biased because I’ve seen so much of Creighton, but I love their offense. It’s modern. They shoot a ton of threes. He’s won with – not that Creighton has bad resources, but fewer resources than what Indiana has. He’s a really good coach. I think his demeanor is perfect for that. He’s a great guy.”
Hummel raises an important point when it comes to NIL. If McDermott has been able to win consistently at Creighton, the sky’s the limit at Indiana, especially with one of the top NIL funds in college basketball. McDermott is also a former Big East Coach of the Year.
The 15-year head coach just led the Bluejays to the Sweet Sixteen last season before falling to Tennessee. Creighton is a lock for the NCAA Tournament again, marking the third consecutive year McDermott has taken his team to March. While the direction the Hoosiers are leaning toward remains unclear, McDermott would be a great hire for the Indiana program.
