49ers’ Brock Purdy gets weirdest contract update involving Mac Jones

By | May 10, 2025

Everyone is expecting Brock Purdy to get paid hundreds of millions of dollars in a soon-to-arrive contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers.

Except, offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak just made things a little weird.

Kubiak had a lot of positive things to say about new backup Mac Jones on Friday.

Jones was 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan’s second choice when he opted for Trey Lance in the 2021 draft.

Kubiak clearly likes Mac, too.

“Going back to college, we obviously studied Mac coming out and we thought very highly of him and his skillset as a thrower and the things he did in college,” Kubiak said.

“And then obviously as a rookie, what he did in the NFL was very impressive,” Kubiak continued. “Mac’s a really good thrower. He stands in the pocket, he’s a strong guy and he’s really smart. And so he’s got a lot of traits that we like for a starting quarterback. And his career has kind of gone up and down a little bit the past couple years, but we saw the same things in Jacksonville that we loved about him as a college prospect, and that really excites us. And he’s doing a great job. And I think Mac’s capable of being a starter in this league. And so he’s going to help us if he needs to.”

Jones was a Pro Bowler (as a replacement) in 2021 after a strong rookie season with the Patriots.

He was traded to the Jaguars in 2024. He started seven games when Trevor Lawrence was out.

Jones threw eight TDs and eight interceptions in his Jacksonville action.

San Francisco made him a priority add this offseason to back up Purdy.

And if the 49ers need Jones on the field, they clearly feel good about him.
