Crystal Palace vs. Liverpool live score: Community Shield result, updates, stats as Wirtz, Ekitike, Frimpong and Kerkez all start

By | August 10, 2025

Liverpool face Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield — the traditional curtain-raiser for England’s top-flight football season.

Although the Championship returned this weekend, this will be the first time Premier League clubs have taken part in competitive domestic action since May.

That month, Palace stunned Manchester City to win the FA Cup final and book this return to Wembley, where they take on Arne Slot’s expensively upholstered Premier League champions.

Liverpool kick off their title defence five days from now at home to Bournemouth, while Palace open the Premier League season against FIFA Club World Cup winners Chelsea next Sunday.

Crystal Palace vs. Liverpool live updates, highlights, and commentary

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in. Liverpool’s four big signings (so far) are all present and correct, with Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz and Ekitike all in from the start. Jones partners Szoboszlai in central midfield, an apparent redeployment for the Hungary international to accommodate Wirtz. Alexis Mac Allister is fit enough for a place on the bench.

If Liverpool’s player turnover is uncommonly high for contemporary Premier League champions, Palace are here to provide a sharp contrast. Oliver Glasner has named the exact same XI that beat Manchester City here to lift the FA Cup in May. Will purported Liverpool target Marc Guehi and star attacker Eberechi Eze still be at Selhurst Park at the end of this month?

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Liverpool go into this match as heavy favourites, but defeat might be no bad thing. Sides triumphing in this match but then falling in pursuit of their primary goal has led to talk of a Community Shield curse. Manchester City were the last team to win the Community Shield and go on to lift the Premier League in the 2018/19 season. Since then City (2019), Liverpool (2020), Leicester City (2021), Liverpool (2022), Arsenal (2023) and City (2024) have lifted the Community Shield and failed to win the Premier League.
