The 2025 Ryder Cup began with a European blitz.

The road team came out strong, handling the Americans early in the day with a dominant performance in foursomes. Then, in the afternoon, the two sides grinded during the four-ball session, with Europe getting a slight advantage.

After the first day, Europe has a 5.5-2.5 lead, largely thanks to a 3-1 score in the morning. While Europe did wi nthe afternoon 2.5-1.5, they were able to gain another point to take the three-shot lead into Saturday,

The story of the first day was the stars, as Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood both started strong with two victories while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau both had two losses. The U.S. will need both those players to turn it around this weekend.

If Team USA does have bright spots, it’s Patrick Cantlay and Cameron Young. Cantlay helped get the first American point on the board in the morning, and was able to help get half-a-point in the afternoon, While Young’s first Ryder Cup match ended in a 6&5 win alongside Justin Thomas.

Round 2 continues Saturday morning with four more foursome matches, followed by another group of four-ball matches in the afternoon. The Sporting News is tracking live scores, updates, and highlights from Day 1 of the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Ryder Cup live updates, highlights from USA vs. Europe matches today

Day 1

Europe 5.5, USA 2.5

6:14 p.m.: On the 18th hole, both McIlroy and Burns barely miss birdie putts, producing the first tied match of the event.

5:58 p.m.: This time Burns matches McIlroy with a birdie on 17, as the final match of the day heads to 18 up for grabs.

Europe 5, USA 2

5:51 p.m.: Rose and Fleetwood are able to hold off DeChambeau and Griffin with a birdie on 18 to secure a full point.

5:45 p.m.: Cantlay and McIlroy exchange birdie putts to send this match to 17 tied.

5:34 p.m.: DeChambeau extends his match with a huge birdie on 17, setting up a pivotal 18th hole to close it out.

5:22 p.m.: Fleetwood is able to drain a birdie putt on 16 while DeChambeau and Griffin miss their’s, guaranteeing half a point.

Europe 4, USA 2

5:08 p.m.: Straka and Rahm close out Scheffler and Spaun on the 16th hole with a Straka birdie.

5:07 p.m.: Cantlay’s been hot but he misses an easy one that would’ve given Team USA the lead. Instead that match remains tied.

4:55 p.m.: Cantlay drills a birdie putt while McIlroy’s attempt lips out, tying that match with five holes to play.

4:49 p.m.: Scheffler finally makes a big putt but Rahm matches him to make the first match of the afternoon dormie.

4:45 p.m.: Fleetwood plays the 14th hole beautifully as he gets Europe 1 Up in his match with a birdie.

4:43 p.m.: Young and Thomas put a point on the board for Team USA as Young finishes out this match on 13.

4:33 p.m.: Cantlay is grinding once again as he birdies the 11th hole to get to 1 Down vs. McIlroy and Lowry.

4:22 p.m.: Young gets another birdie as he and Thomas are pouring it on against Hojgaard and Aberg.

4:10 p.m.: Lowry gets a hole back on his own to extend the lead over Cantlay and Burns back up to two.

4:03 p.m.: Justin Thomas has certainly turned it on in the afternoon, giving Team USA a four-hole lead in his match.

3:55 p.m.: Cantlay gives the Americans a boost by birdieing the 10th hole to get back to 1 Down.

3:49 p.m.: DeChambeau and Griffin have been unable to extend their lead, allowing Fleetwood to birdie the 11th and tie the match.

3:36 p.m.: Once again, Rahm outdoes Scheffler on a pair of birdie putt to put him and Straka up three on Scheffler and Spaun.

3:26 p.m.: Cam Young has played Bethpage Black throughout his life, and it shows as he drains a birdie to go up three shots.

3:19 p.m.: Scheffler’s struggles are becoming more apparent as he has yet to birdie a hole in the afternoon.

3:05 p.m.: McIlroy is feeling it as he knocks down a second-straight birdie putt, taking a two-hole lead over Burns and Cantlay.

2:49 p.m.: McIlroy and Lowry take one-hole lead as McIlroy buries a birdie putt on six.

2:41 p.m.: Rahm bests Scheffler on the eighth hole, making his birdie putt while the world No. 1 misses his.

2:37 p.m.: Ben Griffin’s first Ryder Cup moment comes on the seventh hole as he drains a long putt, but Justin Rose responds with a long make of his own to prevent the U.S. from gaining a point.

2:35 p.m.: Aberg faces a birdie putt to win the sixth hole but can’t convert, as he and Hojgaard remain 2 down.

2:18 p.m.: Justin Thomas stuck an iron right next to the hole on five and makes the lone birdie of the hole to go up two in the match.

2:03 p.m.: DeChambeau birdies the fifth hole to get some red on the board as he and Griffin are now1 UP.

1:54 p.m.: McIlroy’s tee shot on three lands right next to the hole, but he misses the put to keep the match All Square.

1:43 p.m.: Shane Lowry collects a birdie to put the pressure on Burns, who pushes his putt wide to make the match All Square.

1:29 p.m.: New York native Cam Young drains a birdie put on the second hole and two American groups now have a lead.

1:26 p.m.: A strong start to the anchor match as Sam Burns birdies to go up one on the first hole.

1:11 p.m.: Rahm bests Scheffler on the third hole to put Europe 1 Up in the that match. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas produces a birdie to tie Rasmus Hojgaard on the first.

1:01 p.m.: Sepp Straka chips in for birdie on the second hole to tie the first match back up. Meanwhile, thr third group is now on the course at 1.

12:54 a.m.: Fleetwood and DeChambeau both birdie the first hole as the second match is All Square thru 1.

12:45 p.m.: Bryson DeChambeau and Ben Griffin have teed off with President Donald Trump following them, which isn’t a surprise given Bryson’s connection to the Trumps.

12:41 p.m.: Ryder Cup rookie J.J. Spaun opens the match with the only birdie of the group to put the U.S. 1 Up.

12:28 p.m.: The second session is now underway as all four players in the first match have teed off.

12:00 p.m.: Here are the groups and tee times for the afternoon four-ball session.

Europe 3, USA 1

11:53 a.m.: Schaeffle and Cantlay hang on to put up USA’s first point of the event as Hovland’s bad drive on 18 dooms his pair. 

11:39 a.m.: Needing to make a putt to halve the 17th hole, MacIntyre’s roll goes wide to secure half a point for the Americans.

11:30 a.m.: Both Hovland and Cantlay miss birdie putts on the 16th hole, keeping the match tied with two holes left.

11:23 a.m.: Michael Jordan summarized Team USA’s issues susinctly.

11:17 a.m.: Hovland and MacIntyre tie their match with Schauffele and Cantlay on the 15th hole, putting even more pressure on the Americans.

10:51 a.m.: Hovland and MacIntyre have now won two-straight holes and the Americans are up just one with five holes to play.

10:43 a.m.: Fitzpatrick drains a putt to give Europe its third point of the day, stunning Scheffler and Henley.

10:35 a.m.: Not long after, McIlroy and Fleetwood close out their match 5&4 as the Europeans now have a two-point lead.

10:33 a.m.: Rahm and Hatton put the first point on the board as Thomas misses a putt on 15 to extend the match.

10:18 a.m.: Schauffele and Cantlay pick up another hole to go up by three, as the veteran pair have been Team USA’s best group today.

10:14 a.m.: Scheffler and Henley get win a huge hole to drop the deficit to four holes with five to play. Time is running our for the pair, though.

10:02 a.m.: Hatton’s putter remains hot as he and Rahm take a three-hole lead with five to play. Meanwhile, Schauffele and Cantlay win a much-needed hole to go up by two.

9:57 a.m.: Henley and Scheffler have nothing going as they drop another hole to fall five-back with six holes to play.

9:46 a.m.: Hatton nails a long birdie putt to go up two holes on DeChambeau and Thomas.

9:36 a.m.: Schauffele drains a huge putt on eight to get some red back on the board and take a one-hole lead.

9:27 a.m.: Team USA now leads none of the  four matches as MacIntyre and Hovland win the seventh hole for Europe.

9:22 a.m.: Morikawa’s best shot of the day comes on the ninth hole as he sticks an iron next to the hole. He and English need to find some wins quickly.

9:14 a.m.: Russell Henley’s struggles continue as he misses a putt while Ludvig Aberg makes his to go up four.

9:05 a.m.: Rahm misses a putt on nine that results in a tied hole, keeping the first match at Europe Up 1 entering the back nine.

8:52 a.m.: Europe now has three leads on the board as Rahm and Hatton win two-straight holes in the first match.

8:43 p.m.: McIlroy makes another birdie putt to extend his match’s lead to three through five holes. Meanwhile, Thomas misses another putt as the Europeans tie the first match.

8:39 a.m.: Now it’s Hatton’s turn to save Rahm’s tee poor tee shot with a great shot from in between the trees.

8:33 a.m.: The putts are falling for the Europeans. McIlroy and Fleetwood take a two-hole lead while MacIntyre and Fitzpatrick drain long putts to put pressure on Team USA.

8:25 a.m.: A great swing from Europe as Henley misses a birdie putt to lose the fifth hole while Rahm produces an incredible shot to save Hatton and get Europe back into play on that hole.

8:22 a.m.: Cantlay drains a birdie putt on the second hole to take an early lead in the fourth match.

8:19 a.m.: A few USA players produce nice approach shots to set up great chances, while Hatton’s drive on six ends up in big trouble well left of the fairway.

8:12 a.m.: Henley misses a birdie putt that opens the door for Europe to take another one-hole lead in the second match.

8:09 a.m.: Schauffele misses a great opportunity to take an early lead as that match is tied after one.

8:00 a.m.: The fourth and final group has teed off with MacIntyre and Schauffele get the match going.

7:53 a.m.: Fleetwood’s impressive wedge shot from deep in the rough leads to winning the hole as Europe takes an early lead in that match.

7:49 a.m.: Scheffler drains a birdie putt on the second hole to tie the match back up.

7:44 a.m.: The third match is now on the course as Rory McIlroy and Harris English both tee off.

7:35 a.m.: Thomas misses a birdie putt on 2, missing an opportuntity to win a second-straight hole. On the first hole, Europe is in position to take an early lead.

7:29 a.m.: Russell Henley and Ludvig Aberg tee off to open the second match with Europe getting the early advantage closer to the hole.

7:22 a.m.: Both Thomas and Hatton put their wedge shots on the green as each team has a birdie putt. Rahm misses his while DeChambeau drains his putt, and USA is up one in the first match.

7:12 a.m.: Rahm and DeChambeau open to event, as Europe ends up in the rough while Team USA is feet short of the green. We are underway!

7:00 a.m.: The Ryder Cup is moments away from teeing off! Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas will face Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton in the first match.
