Packers predicted to sign former $242 million Pro Bowl quarterback to back up Jordan Love

By | April 6, 2026

The Green Bay Packers don’t have a reliable No. 2 quarterback on the roster currently to back up Jordan Love.

With Malik Willis departing in free agency for the Miami Dolphins, the Packers will have a new backup signal-caller in 2026. As of right now, Desmond Ridder or Kyle McCord is set to handle those duties, and head coach Matt LaFleur can’t be comfortable with either as the backup.

That’s why Sportsnaut’s Andrew Buller-Russ predicts Green Bay will sign New York Giants free agent quarterback Russell Wilson to serve as the QB2 behind Love.

“Russell Wilson showed he still has plenty of juice in his arm last season in New York,” Buller-Russ said. “Landing as the QB2 on a contender in Green Bay feels like a win for the 37-year-old.”

Wilson started just three games in 2025 with the Giants before being benched for Jaxson Dart, tossing three touchdowns to three interceptions with a 58% completion rate.

It’s clear that Wilson can no longer be a high-level or even above-average starting quarterback, but the 37-year-old can still serve as an elite backup.

Signing Wilson to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Love would be a savvy move by Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst. The 10-time Pro Bowler would provide viable play if thrust into action, and even if he doesn’t see the field, Wilson’s experience would be a valuable addition to Green Bay’s quarterback room.

Additionally, the Super Bowl XLVIII champion should be incredibly cheap to sign, so this feels like a no-brainer move for the Packers to make in order to address a major need on the roster.
