Despite the Minnesota Timberwolves still leading the series 3-2, the wind behind their sails has greatly diminished.
During their 112-96 Game 4 win, both Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo went down with devastating injuries that will sideline them through this series and more. Edwards hyperextended his knee in the second quarter, while DiVincenzo tore his right Achilles.
After a victory at home in Game 5, the Denver Nuggets will travel up to Minneapolis in the hopes of emerging victorious in a win-or-go-home Game 6. Serbian star Nikola Jokic finished Game 5 with his second triple-double of these playoffs, and has shown that Denver’s playoff success heavily relies on him. Jamal Murray has also shown his scoring prowess, averaging 26 points per game during this playoff campaign (5th in NBA Playoffs).
With Minnesota’s string of injuries, guards Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland have been called up as the next men up for big minutes. Dosunmu finished Game 4 with a stellar 43 points while shooting 76.5% from the field, along with hitting all 12 of his free throws. Hyland has also begun playing 20 or more minutes since Edwards and DiVincenzo went down.
While it seems like the Timberwolves are one bad Jokic shooting night away from advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals, their long-term playoff future solely relies on when Edwards can get back onto the court. If Minnesota is unable to win tonight at home, the team will have to travel to Denver for Game 7.
