Thunder urged to trade All-Star after underwhelming playoff peformance

By | June 1, 2026

Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star big man Chet Holmgren had a rough go of it in the Western Conference finals against the San Antonio Spurs

Holmgren failed to score more than 16 points in a single game in the series, and he scored in single-digits on two separate occasions, including in Game 7 of the series in which he tallied just 4 points and 4 rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

Thunder urged to trade Chet Holmgren after disappointing postseason

As a result of his underwhelming performance, the Thunder have been urged to consider trading him over the offseason.

During an appearance on the Kevin O’Connor Show, Tom Haberstroh of Yahoo said that the Thunder should try to trade Holmgren in order to move up in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft to select Duke star Cam Boozer.

In a separate article, O’Connor agreed that the Thunder should at least consider the notion of trying to trade Holmgren.

“So, trade Chet? I don’t think the answer is a definitive yes, to be clear. Chet was voted second for Defensive Player of the Year for a reason. He might’ve got dunked on, but he still made some competitive plays for the Thunder on that end throughout the series. And he’s only 24 years old, so there’s room for growth on offense,” O’Connor wrote.

“But it is completely reasonable to question whether Chet should be part of Oklahoma City’s future. … Holmgren has shown no offensive upside. His handle has not improved since college. He shows every symptom of a playoff choker. He plays like he’s terrified of The Alien. Presti has traded a homegrown talent on the verge of a max for a lot less. A nightmare Game 7 and the second apron just revived the same debate.”
