Cubs have to fix biggest issue and can do so by making non-Tarik Skubal trade with Tigers

By | June 5, 2026

The Chicago Cubs have played very poorly recently, and there’s absolutely no debate that something has to change in the near future. The Cubs were one of the best teams in Major League Baseball just a month ago, but are now 33-30 and 4-6 over their last 10 games. Not only that, but the Cubs are 5.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.

While 5.5 games isn’t a whole lot at this point in the season, it’s only fair to mention that the Brewers have done nothing but win for a lot of the past few years. It would be just a bit surprising to see them start struggling out of nowhere and end up giving up this lead, unless the Cubs go on a great run throughout the remainder of the season.

Right now, there’s no chance the Cubs can feel confident about what they have. In fact, they absolutely have to go out and make a trade if they even want to start competing at the level we all know they should be.

One name in particular that they should keep an eye on is Casey Mize, with one CBS writer recently saying he should be traded.

“If the Tigers do go ahead and sell, other rentals like Casey Mize and Gleyber Torres could find themselves on the move as well, though both are currently on the injured list (Mize has a groin strain, Torres an oblique issue). What about Justin Verlander? He’s working his way back from a hip issue and returning to the Tigers this season felt like a storybook end to a Hall of Fame career. If Verlander wants to chase a ring, though, my guess is Detroit would do right by him and work out a trade with his preferred team,” Mike Axisa of CBS Sports wrote.

The problem with Mize is that he’s dealt with some injuries throughout the past few years and, frankly, for a lot of his career.

However, the Detroit Tigers have been one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball at 25-38 and already 10.5 games back in the American League Central. If the Tigers are willing to move on from him, and the Cubs definitely have the farm system to land him, I can see this trade making a lot of sense.
