Braves pair Chris Sale with 3X All-Star in Red Sox trade idea

By | June 26, 2026

The Atlanta Braves are one of the top teams in the National League and the Majors.

Though they could use a starting pitcher or two due to the rotation’s hefty dose of injuries.

The Braves lack a true No. 2 starter behind Chris Sale. That’s where the Boston Red Sox could help them.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer wrote Friday that a three-time All-Star from the Red Sox could be a great fit with the Braves.

“Would he be able to say no to the Braves if they wanted him? One doubts it,” Rymer wrote about right-hander Sonny Gray. “According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Gray has told friends in the past that he’d love to pitch for them. And if Atlanta could team him with Chris Sale, the road to the World Series would get that much straighter.”

Gray has a no-trade clause in his contract, so he must approve any deal the Red Sox make for it to become official.

The 36-year-old is 9-1 with a 2.95 ERA through 14 starts in 2026.

In Rymer’s trade idea, the Red Sox would receive right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver and outfielder Pat Clohisy from Atlanta.

“Though Gray has a $31 million salary this year and a $10 million buyout for next year, $20 million of the total sum is on the St. Louis Cardinals,” he added. “That gives Boston a little bit of leeway to press for a maximized package in trade talks.”

Adding Gray would help strengthen Atlanta’s rotation, making them a potentially tougher opponent for the Milwaukee Brewers or Los Angeles Dodgers in the postseason.
