Mexico vs. Ecuador live score, result, highlights as Jimenez doubles El Tri’s lead

By | June 30, 2026

Mexico and Ecuador have taken different approaches to conjuring up intrigue within their respective fanbases in recent years. El Tri has relied largely on veterans to cement its status as one of CONCACAF’s finest sides. From Raul Jimenez and Guillermo Ochoa to Jesus Gallardo and Edson Alvarez, the core of Mexico’s national team has been marked by its wisdom and experience.

Ecuador, meanwhile, has prioritized youthfulness within its ranks. Gonzalo Plata, Nilson Angulo, Moises Caicedo, Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapie have all emerged as first-team players in Ecuador’s setup in recent years. All are below the age of 26, the most glint of a golden generation of Ecuadorian footballers who look poised to bring the national program to new heights throughout the next decade.

Which ideology reigns supreme? We’ll get a chance to find out when the El Tri and La Tri face off on Tuesday night. A spot in the Round of 16 beckons for the victor. The loser, meanwhile, will be left rueing what could have been.

Mexico vs. Ecuador live updates, highlights from 2026 World Cup knockouts

(All times ET)

67′: Galindez makes stunning stop to keep Ecuador in game

11:31 p.m.: Galindez leapt high to deny Montes, who had a clear header in front of goal. Splendid stop by the Ecuadorian ‘keeper, whose cage has been breached a fair few times thus far.

59′: Mora receives raucous ovation as he’s replaced by Gutierrez

11:22 p.m.: Mora’s race has been run. And what a race it was for the 17-year-old, who will give way for U.S.-born midfielder Brian Gutierrez. Another impressive showcase for the teenager, widely tipped to become one of Mexico’s best players before long.

47′: Alvarado flashes attempt wide as Mexico starts second half on front foot

11:14 p.m.: El Tri continues to produce chances in the early stages of tonight’s contest. Roberto Alvarado danced down the flank before sending a shot towards Galindez’s frame. However, it whistled wide. He should’ve done better there.

11:10 p.m.: We’re back to life from Estadio Azteca. Ecuador will look to cut into Mexico’s advantage.

40′: Rangel equal to curling effort as Ecuador probes for way back into game

10:41 p.m.: For the first time in tonight’s game, Rangel was. called into action. He responded to the challenge with aplomb, leaping high to turn away John Yeboah’s curling effort before it nestled into the top corner. The ball was close to Rangel. But he had to use a strong hand to palm it away.

31′: Jimenez doubles Mexico’s advantage as Estadio Azteca rocks

10:32 p.m.: GOALLLLLLLL! That’s two for El Tri! Raul Jimenez latches onto Quinones’, unleashing a scorcher that dances past Galindez’s reach and into the top corner. Mexico is flying here!

Mexico 2, Ecuador 0

22′: Quinones sets Mexico City alight with fiery strike

10:30 p.m.: The Spanish-speaking call of Quinones’ strike is far more enchanting than its English counterpart. Telemundo has struck gold with its commentary team.

10:24 p.m.: GOALLLLLL!  Mexico finds the net first! It’s Julian Quinones again, who cut inside before launching a devastating strike past the ‘keeper. That’s his third score this tourney.

Mexico 1, Ecuador 0

16′: Mora’s effort whistles wide

10:17 p.m.: Mora nearly lit the roof up with a curling strike that nearly rounded the bend. El Tri finds itself in control in this early moments, although Ecuador still carries some attacking threat.

7′: Jimenez’s header spurns target as Mexico starts out in flying form

10:10 p.m.: El Tri is off to a wondrous start, already tallying three shots in the opening 10 minutes. No chance was better than a header to Jimenez, which skipped wide of the frame. Mexico is on the ascendancy early.

8 p.m.: The starting lineups for tonight’s contest are out! Just one change for Mexico, with Cesar Montez surprisingly taking Edson Alvarez’s place in the back line. Youngster Gilberto Mora will retain his place in Mexico’s lineup, looking to offer musings as the No. 10 in El Tri’s attack.

Ecuador, meanwhile, goes with the same lineup it went to in its 2-1 win over Germany.

5:30 p.m.: Ecuador’s football federation launched a complaint against Mexico after Mexican fans surrounded La Tri’s hotel and set of fireworks late last night. We’ll see if this feud transfers to the field.

Ecuador has never won a knockout game in the World Cup, while Mexico has fallen in the first round of knockouts in each of its last seven knockout stage appearances.
