With LeBron James’ stint with the Los Angeles Lakers coming to an end earlier this summer, many are wondering where the four-time NBA champion will spend his 24th season in the big leagues.
Per a Friday night report from ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Warriors are among the five teams (Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Philadelphia 76ers) that have a realistic chance of signing James before the start of the 2026-27 campaign.
Additionally, the Stein Line’s Jake Fischer noted that the Warriors are ‘still involved as any team’, confirming that the seven-time NBA champions are firmly in the mix for the 22-time All-Star.
On Sunday, Heavy’s Sean Deveney revealed when James is expected to make his highly anticipated free agency decision.
“The whole league is in a holding pattern, of course, based on the pending free-agent decision of LeBron James,” Deveney wrote. “Thus far, he has done well to send multiple signals and misdirections that have kept all teams involved thinking they at least have a chance to sign him.”
“The Cavs, Warriors, and Heat are still the favorites, but that’s only based on the educated guesses of those around the league. The expectation is that James will decide this week, and that should free up the market for the rest of the top players.”
While many were under the impression that James would drag things out to help build up the suspense, it sounds like he could be near an NBA-altering decision. The Warriors could certainly use James’ Hall of Fame-worthy contributions in 2026-27, as they could be left with just one elite offensive threat to start the year (Jimmy Butler is still recovering from his ACL injury).
At the end of the day, the ball is in James’ court, and if he feels the Warriors will help him finish his career the right way, a blockbuster signing might be on the horizon.
