Caitlin Clark will have to remain on her best behavior for the rest of the WNBA regular season.
The Indiana Fever appealed the technical foul Clark received during their 123-88 victory over the Connecticut Sun on July 22, hoping the league would remove it from her season total. However, the WNBA reportedly denied that appeal, leaving Clark with seven technical fouls and only one more separating her from an automatic one-game suspension.
“The WNBA will not rescind the technical foul assessed to Caitlin Clark during last Wednesday’s win over the Connecticut Sun, a league source confirmed to IndyStar,” Brian Haenchen of the Indianapolis Star reported.
Clark avoided another technical during Indiana’s 103-93 win over the Seattle Storm on Tuesday. Still, the league’s decision means the threat of a suspension will follow the Fever star into every remaining game of the regular season.

Clark’s latest technical came during the third quarter of Indiana’s blowout victory over Connecticut. After Sun center Olivia Nelson-Ododa was called for a foul, Clark and rookie guard Saniya Rivers exchanged words. Rivers reportedly told Clark that she had been locking her up defensively.
Clark responded by telling Rivers to look at the scoreboard. Indiana held a commanding 95-67 lead at the time. Officials issued double technical fouls, penalizing both players for the exchange.
“I’m never going to back down from anybody,” Clark said after the game. “She was just telling me she was locking me up, and I told her to look at the scoreboard. That’s really all I said.”
The Fever believed the relatively routine trash talk did not deserve a technical foul and asked the league to reconsider. That attempt was unsuccessful.
When would Caitlin Clark be suspended?
Under WNBA rules, a player receives an automatic one-game suspension after collecting an eighth technical foul during the regular season. That suspension also comes with a $1,500 fine. The penalties do not stop there. A player is suspended for another game after every two technical fouls beyond the eighth. In Clark’s case, additional suspensions would follow her 10th, 12th and 14th technical fouls.
That puts Clark in a difficult position as Indiana enters the stretch run of its schedule. Her competitiveness and willingness to challenge opponents have long been central parts of her game, but another emotional exchange with an official or opposing player could temporarily cost the Fever their most important playmaker.
Clark had six technical fouls during her rookie season but never reached the suspension threshold. She has already surpassed that total in 2026. The Fever will continue their road trip against the Portland Fire on Thursday. Clark is averaging 21.0 points and 7.9 assists this season, making her availability critical as Indiana battles for playoff positioning.
Clark escaped Seattle without adding to her technical-foul total. Following the WNBA’s decision, however, her margin for error is officially gone.
