We have our first semifinal at Euro 2021.
Spain beat Switzerland 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout after a 1-1 draw to advance from the quarterfinals. Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon stopped two Swiss penalties and Switzerland’s Ruben Vargas also missed his attempt.
The Spaniards will play Italy in the first Euro 2021 semifinal on July 6 after the Azzurri beat Belgium 2-1 in a battle of heavyweights. The Italians’ unbeaten streak has now reached 32 games and counting.
The Saturday slate will see an unprecedented quarterfinal between Denmark and the Czech Republic. While the Danes were everyone’s pre-tournament dark horse favorite, the Czechs came out of nowhere to beat the Netherlands as star striker Patrik Schick (4 goals) continues to lead the way.
The quarterfinal round wraps up on Saturday with England’s quest to make the semifinals when it faces Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. After defeating archrivals Germany in the Round of 16, English fans will feel like this is their tournament to lose. If they beat Ukraine, the English will host the semifinal and a potential final at Wembley Stadium in London.
The series of single-elimination matches will see the semis and the final played at Wembley Stadium in London, where the best national team in Europe will be crowned. If matches in the knockout rounds end in a tie, there will be 30 minutes of extra time. If the deadlock persists, the match will be decided via penalty-kick shootout.
