Adam Cole’s contributions to NXT during his four-year-long run cannot be understated. He helped usher in one of the brand’s best eras and fans will always appreciate him for that. Adam Cole was done with NXT after TakeOver 36 and shortly after that, Adam Cole’s WWE contract also expired.
After this, this made him a free agent. On top of that, he didn’t sign another contract with WWE, so he was free to do whatever he wanted to. Adam Cole decided to go to AEW as he made his debut at AEW All Out last month and it is a decision he was very happy to make. Fans of Adam Cole are well aware of his ‘Bay Bay’ catchphrase and always say it during his entrances and have a blast doing so.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Adam Cole talked about his popular ‘Bay Bay’ catchphrase and revealed how the catchphrase came about.
So I have been doing “Adam Cole Bay Bay” since 2009, but it didn’t catch on until about 2014. It kind of started early on in my wrestling career and had done a Maryland Championship Wrestling show. Joey Matthews [Joey Mercury in WWE] was on the show, and he was in the finals of the Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup. He was the heel, and he was just walking around going “Joey Matthews!” and putting his fists up in the air, and he said it so many times.
I remember sitting there and thinking that is so smart. If you are not really a hardcore wrestling fan, if you remember one name from that show, it’s going to be Joey Matthews. So I thought how can I incorporate that into my own thing? I’m a huge Chris Jericho fan, and when he would stand on top of someone, flex and go “come on baby!” I was like oh, I will do “Adam Cole Bay Bay.”
It remains to be seen what is next instore for Adam Cole in AEW as he is certainly having a great time being part of the Elite and competing in high profile matches in the company.
