The final issues of this fun little series coms to a climactic close as Red Sonja and her gang make a final stand against Mordread and his dark powers! How do they manage such a feat?
Sonja, as we know by now, is not one to be trifled with, and having lived with cursed armour, she feels pretty trifled! Of course, we know that when it comes to Sonja she reacts in one way! But how do you stop a black knight who is determined to wield the only weapon that can kill him, as he stand protected against all blades?
Dan Abnett, consciously or unconsciously borrows from Doctor Who, Excalibur and Star Wars, with a Mandolorian twist, in closing out Sonja’s battle with her previously worn armour, recently reincarnated. Who knew bad fashion choices could come back and kill you? Abnett weaves a busy issue that looks to set up Sonja in a similar manner to a Conan treatise. In doing so, Abnett may have missed a continuity glitch in the chaos. Still, the key parts work and even if Sonja doesn’t “have the power” Abnett has her do a pretty damn good impersonation!
Luca Colandrea’s art remains cartoony, where action has replaced the comedy. Whilst that may work now, but I miss the fun talking to the armour and the love hate element that came with that. The art style does seem to give the book a younger feel than you may expect, but if you’re nine issues in already, then you know what to expect. The same can be said about the colors from Ellie Wright whose bright scheme eschews the normal fantasy, dungeons and dragons environment. Jeff Eckleberry’s letter have an easy flow to them, with different fonts for different characters.
A fun romp comes to an end, or as Abnett himself, could this actually be a beginning?
