With the Get Gotti docuseries streaming on Netflix, the death of John Gotti has piqued the interest of many viewers. How did the mob boss die? Here’s all you need to know about John Gotti’s demise and when it happened.

When and how did John Gotti die?

On June 10, 2002, John Gotti died at the age of 61 while battling throat cancer in prison.

After being convicted with a life sentence in 1992, Gotti spent the better part of the rest of his life in prison. Serving a tough life in captivity, he was sent to the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, in 1998 as he was diagnosed with throat cancer.

His surgery was successful as his tumor was removed. But that wasn’t the end of his ailment as his cancer returned two years later. He got transferred to Springfield yet again and lived the rest of his days there. His condition continued to decline quickly, resulting in his death on June 10, 2002.

How did John Gotti get caught?

John Gotti was arrested in 1968 with a 3-year sentence, in 1974 with a 4-year sentence, and in 1990. 2 years later, he was convicted with a life sentence without parole.

His 1968 arrest by the FBI was for hijacking Northwest Airlines and he got a 3-year sentence at Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary after pleading guilty.

Then, in 1973, he was part of gangster James McBratney’s killing alongside Ruggiero and Ralph Galione. He was arrested in 1974 for McBratney’s murder and received a 4-year sentence (because Galione shot McBratney). However, he was released after just two years of imprisonment.

He then took over the Gambino family and was formally acclaimed as the new boss in 1986. The FBI’s long battle with the crime boss continued for four more years.

Finally, on December 11, 1990, NYPD detectives and FBI agents raided the Ravenite, and Gotti was arrested along with Gravano, and Locascio. He was charged with multiple crimes including racketeering, conspiracy to murder Gaetano “Corky” Vastola, obstruction of justice, illegal gambling, loansharking, bribery, tax evasion, and the murders of Castellano, Bilotti, DiBernardo, Liborio Milito, and Louis Dibono.

Two years later, on April 2, 1992, he was convicted with a life sentence without parole.
