Comedian Jo Koy hosted the 2024 Golden Globes and generated some backlash following his jokes about Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie and Taylor Swift at the award ceremony. Here’s everything you need to know.
What did Jo Koy say about Barbie?
Jo Koy made multiple jokes about Barbie that were sexist and misogynistic.
First, Koy compared Oppenheimer and Barbie and said the Barbie movie was “based on a plastic doll with big boobies”. The reaction of director Greta Gerwig was then shown and her excitement turned to disappointment as her smile faded.
The joke fell flat with the audience but that did not deter Koy who continued to make jokes about Barbie:
“I don’t want you guys to think that I’m a creep. It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll, just something about your eyes, Ryan…it’s not all about you Margot.”
Ryan Gosling’s reaction was then shown and he did not appear amused. Then Margot Robbie’s reaction was shown and she just looked embarrassed.
Jo Koy, persisting with the Barbie jokes, then said “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from bad breasts, cellulite and flat feet. Or what casting directors call… ‘character actor’.” Along with the joke about Gosling, this also fell flat with the audience.
These jokes led to a lot of online backlash that criticized Jo Koy for his inappropriate comments. Koy then tried to defend himself in a later interview by deflecting blame to other writers who helped write his speech for the award ceremony.
What did Jo Koy say about Taylor Swift?
Jo Koy joked that there were fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes compared to the NFL events.
This joke was about Swift attending the recent NFL games to support her reported boyfriend and Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Swift’s reaction was caught on camera and she did not appear amused by the joke, opting to just sip her drink.
