House Party reboot casts Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Tosin Cole as leads

Deadline reports that the New Line Cinema reboot of House Party has found its two leads in Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Bumblebee) and Tosin Cole (Doctor Who). The Springhill Company has fast-tracked this film for franchise potential based on Reginald Hudlin’s House Party (1990), which became a huge part of the cultural zeitgeist over the last thirty years.

The original story centered on Play who wants to plan a house party to end all house parties. Meanwhile, his best friend, Kid, wants to go to get to know Sydney the hottest girl in school. The duo ends up going on a wild ride and having the night of their lives. The box office hit and its subsequent sequels burst hip-hop into mainstream cinema and launched the career of its stars Christopher Reid, Christopher Martin, Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Dawson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and musical group Full Force. Its legacy and impact deeply influenced the coming-of-age party genre of comedy and Black cinema as they are known today.

The upcoming remake of the film will be helmed by South Central L.A. native Calmatic, music video director of such hits as Lil’ Nas X’s Old Town Road–for which he won a Grammy. House Party marks the award-winning director’s feature debut from a script penned by Emmy-nominated Atlanta writing duo Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori. SpringHill’s LeBron James and Maverick Carter are on board to produce. Reginald Hudlin and Warrington Hudlin will executive produce along with Spencer Beighley and Jamal Henderson for SpringHill. Overseeing for New Line are executives Richard Brener, Josh Mack and Victoria Palmeri.
