Mammootty is coming back to the big screens with his Malayalam horror thriller film Bramayugam. The movie has created a stir among the audience for its unique concept. However, not all of it is positive, as the film is also facing criticism over the name of Mammotty’s character. The movie is just a day away from its release and it is facing a major legal issue.
Apart from Mammootty, Bramayugam also stars Arjun Ashokan in a crucial role. Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, and others play supporting characters. Rahul Sadasivan has written and directed the film, while Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios are bankrolling it.
Mammootty’s Bramayugam lawsuit explained
Mamoottyy and the movie Bramayugam are facing a lawsuit from the head of Punjamon Illam, a traditional Brahmin household in Kerala. The family has a history of 200 years and they have claimed in their lawsuit that the movie is defaming their name. The film’s main character’s name is Kunjumon Potty and the family is concerned that he is playing the negative role of a man who practices black magic.
According to Live Law, the family’s plea stated, “If the name of the lead character and its traditional home is not changed the same will cause serious prejudice to the petitioner, his family members, ancestors, and successors.”
Despite the lawsuit, the makers of the movie have not responded to the case publicly. According to a report by OTTPlay, the makers have changed the name of Mammootty’s character to Kodumon Potty. Moreover, the actor has been requesting fans to watch the movie with an open mind. He mentioned during the film’s trailer launch event that the actual story is a lot different from the clip.
Bramayugam will hit theaters on February 15.
