New Scream Film Shot Multiple Versions to Stop Spoilers

New Scream film shot multiple versions to stop spoilers

Radio Silence, the directors of the upcoming Scream franchise installment, confirmed to Bloody Disgusting that in addition to having multiple scenes prepped in scripts given to actors they actually SHOT multiple versions as well.

“There are not only multiple versions of the Scream screenplay, but also the movie, with the purpose to obfuscate fans who want to spoil the final product. This was confirmed to me by the filmmakers..”, shared BD journalist Brad Miska, who produced the VHS trilogy which featured a segment from Radio Silence.

It comes as no surprise that the creative team behind Scream is making sure to keep the films as tightly under wraps as possible. It does raise the question of whether or not this means multiple endings were shot as well. The past Wes Craven films have dealt with massive script leaks since its sequel, which prompted writer Kevin Williamson to scrap his original idea for Scream 2 altogether. The following films in the series employed the multiple script versions method as a precaution. Many films followed suit as the internet culture of leaks has only grown since, with studios having to find more solutions to keep the filmmaker’s vision intact until release. Currently, all that we know about the film is that it will follow “a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.” The film is set for release on January 14, 2022.

So it’s very clear that the filmmakers are following a very simple formula as the gospel of Randy outlined in the original film, “EVERYBODY’S A SUSPECT!”

David Arquette became the first actor from the original franchise to sign on for the fifth film in the series, along with Courteney Cox who signed on after lead heroine Neve Campbell agreed to reprise the role of Sidney Prescott. Alongside the returning vets, including Scream 4‘s Marley Shelton and the film’s new leads Melissa Barrera (Vida) and Jenna Ortega (The Babysitter: Killer Queen). They are joined by an ensemble that includes Kyle Gallner (Ghosts of War), Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers), and Mikey Madison (Better Things), who join previously cast Jack Quaid (The Boys), Mason Gooding (Booksmart) and Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why).

Scream is co-directed by Ready or Not filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (of Radio Silence) from a screenplay co-written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick(Ready or Not). It will be produced by Project X Entertainment’s James Vanderbilt as well as Paul Neinstein and William Sherak for Spyglass, with original screenwriter Kevin Williamson executive producing with Radio Silence’s third member Chad Villella.

The late Wes Craven’s Scream was released in 1996 becoming the highest-grossing slasher movie of all time. Craven and writer Kevin Williamson revitalized the slasher genre with their trilogy. Turning iconic and some overdone horror tropes on its head, the meta style of the film set a new bar for the horror movies that followed. The return of early OG slasher jugguarnaut Halloween (2018) would go on to take the title back and continue the tradition of passing down more tales of beloved terror titans to a new generation of horror fans as well as long time ones. We can’t wait for Ghostface’s comeback.

Scream marks the second major horror franchise reboot Spyglass is working on, with the studio developing a remake of the Clive Barker cult horror classic Hellraiser, with David S. Goyer (Terminator: Dark Fate) attached to pen the script.
