After praising Nicolas Cage‘s Dracula performance in Universal Pictures’ horror comedy Renfield, The Conjuring Universe creator James Wan has revealed the Oscar winning-actor almost played the Prince of Darkness much earlier — in Wan’s now-defunct film adaptation of Castlevania.
In an Instagram post, Wan confirmed that he and Cage met years ago to discuss the possibility. The Mandy actor is no stranger to the vampire genre; he previously starred in the 1988 cult classic movie Vampire’s Kiss.
What is the Castlevania series?
Based on Konami’s popular video game series, Castlevania centered around Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Sypha Belnades as they try to defend Wallachia from Dracula and his army, who is seeking vengeance against humanity for the death of his wife and Alucard’s mother, Lisa Tepes.
Castlevania was executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Adi Shankar, and Fred Seibert. Production services were provided by Austin, Texas-based Powerhouse Animation. Last year, it was confirmed that Netflix will be releasing a Castlevania spin-off centering around Richter Belmont and Maria Renard.
Castlevania Seasons 1-4 are available for streaming on Netflix.
