Rosaline: Kaitlyn Dever Leads 20th Century's New Take on Romeo & Juliet

20th Century Studios has acquired the rights to the film adaptation of Rosaline, based on author Rebecca Serle’s novel titled When You Were Mine, which is a modern take on the classic Shakespearean tale of Romeo and Juliet. According to Deadline, Golden Globe-nominated actress Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart) has officially signed on to star in the project which is being described as a comedic and revisionist take on one of the most famous love stories ever told.

The film will give a modern twist on the love story of Romeo and Juliet which will now be told through the eyes of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline, a sharp but idealistic young woman—who happens to be Romeo’s recent ex. What begins as an attempt to foil the famous romance and win back her guy becomes a journey of self-discovery as she ultimately works to help get the star-crossed lovers back together.

Rosaline will be directed by Karen Maine (Yes, God, Yes) from a script written by 500 Days of Summer duo Scott Neustadfer and Michael H. Weber. It will be produced by Stranger Things EP Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen through their 21 Laps banner with Emily Morris and Becca Edelman overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. 20th Century Studios’ Sarah Shepard will also oversee the film.

The Rosaline movie will be added to Dever’s growing list of upcoming projects, including the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen, Hulu’s limited series Dopesick, Brian Duffield’s No One Will Save You, and the recent George Clooney and Julia Roberts’ reunion project Ticket to Paradise.
