Why Fans Think Marvel’s Shang-Chi 2 Could Be Canceled

By | September 10, 2024

It has been four years since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings graced theaters. Since then, fans have always wondered about the state of Shang-Chi 2’s development and release date. Due to the lack of any solid updates regarding the sequel in recent years and Simu Liu’s martial artist superhero not appearing in any subsequent MCU projects, many have become concerned as to whether the project has been canceled or delayed at Marvel Studios.

Curiosity about the project has only grown further, especially with the recent news that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton has been tapped to direct Marvel Studios and Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man 4.

So, has Marvel’s Shang-Chi 2 been canceled or delayed? When could Shang-Chi 2 be coming out? Here’s everything you need to know.

Is Marvel’s Shang-Chi 2 canceled or delayed?

There is no official confirmation as to whether Shang-Chi 2 has been canceled or delayed by Marvel Studios.

Despite this, both Destin Daniel Cretton and Simu Liu are attached to the project. Liu shared two updates about Shang-Chi 2 in 2024. The first update was in April 2024 when she wrote, “I proooomiss it’s happening,” in a reply to a Threads user who expressed their opinion that Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fanbase and pointed out how the superhero studio did not include Shang-Chi in any of the other recent Marvel films.

The second update Liu offered was in an interview with Press Trust of India in August 2024, when promoting his new movie Jackpot!, which features his Shang-Chi co-star Awkwafina and John Cena. “A lot of it is above my pay grade, but it’s definitely happening. So just very excited to, like, work on it, and it’s gonna be amazing. I really can’t say anything beyond that,” the Barbie star said.

When will Shang-Chi 2 come out?

It is currently unclear when Shang-Chi 2 will be coming out.

However, considering there have not been any official updates about the project, even in this year’s San Diego Comic-Con event, the project may only come out sometime late in Phase 6, perhaps after Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars or even Phase 7.

Chances of Shang-Chi 2 coming out late in Phase 6 or even Phase 7 is also quite likely because of director Destin Daniel Cretton’s attachment to several projects including a live-action Naruto movie, the Wonder Man series, and aforementioned Spider-Man 4.
