Wipeout Rush Announced, Features ‘Card-Based Racing’

By | September 16, 2021

Rogue Games is bringing back PlayStation’s iconic Wipeout series, but not in the way you expected.

The next Wipeout iteration will be a mobile title coming to both iOS and Android called Wipeout Rush. While it’ll be similarly fleshed out to past iterations, as it features a single-player campaign, a soundtrack by Alastair Lyndsay, and 60 ships that come from past titles, it won’t be the same high-octane racing as before. Instead, it features what the developer calls “compelling merge gameplay,” which has the player selecting cards in order to find success on the race track.

“If I want that visceral, immersive, intense racing experience, I’ll find it waiting on PlayStation,” said Rogue Games CEO Matt Casamassina to IGN. “But at the same time, we’re delighted that we could rethink wipEout for mobile with some fun new play mechanics and gorgeous visuals.

“We hope fans will come to it with an open mind because—although different—we’re proud to bring the Wipeout franchise back into focus with a fresh take on the formula, and we’ve poured a lot of love into the presentation, which includes loads of iconic ships and tracks, a new comic book-inspired narrative, a fitting electronica soundtrack, and gorgeous visuals that run at 60 frames per second on modern hardware.”

Wipeout Rush will release in early 2022 for iOS and Android. The series last saw a new release in 2012, which was Wipeout 2048 for PlayStation Vita. Since then, 2048 and Wipeout HD have been ported to PlayStation 4 as the Wipeout Omega Collection.
