The Packers and 49ers are setting an NFL record when they meet for the 10th time in the postseason, the most playoff games between any two teams.
The two storied franchises — with a combined nine Super Bowl wins — last played on January 22, 2022 with the 49ers shutting down Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field in a 13-10 win. The Niners have owned the series of late, winning the last four playoff matchups.
While San Francisco has looked like the class of NFC all season, it faces off against a red-hot Packers team fresh off torching the Dallas Cowboys on the road in the wild card round. Jordan Love — who threw for three touchdowns with a near-perfect passer rating — looked anything but a QB making his postseason debut.
It continues a recent trend with Love looking every bit as comfortable in Green Bay as his predecessor, future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Dating back to Week 11’s win over the Chargers, Love has thrown 21 touchdown passes and completed over 70% of his passes with just one interception.
Of course, Love received plenty of help.
Aaron Jones ran all over the Dallas defense, gashing the Cowboys for 118 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. Like Love, Jones is finding his form as this marked his fourth straight 100-year rushing game after failing to hit 100 yards in any of his first eight games of the season. The timing couldn’t be better for Jones who battled a series of hamstring and knee injuries which caused him to miss six games during the regular season.
Slowing down Love and Jones presents a tall task for San Francisco’s stout defense which ranked near the top of the league in most statistical categories — third in points allowed, fourth in DVOA, first in TD-Int ratio, third in rushing yards and second in turnover percentage, among others.
On the other side of the ball, Brock Purdy showed remarkable consistency all season long, leading the NFL in Total QBR en route to earning his first Pro Bowl selection. Purdy’s sterling play provided much-needed balance alongside Kyle Shanahan’s typically prolific rushing attack which ranked third.
RB Christian McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing, yards from scrimmage and total touchdowns — and most importantly — stayed healthy, starting all 16 games before sitting out the regular season finale with the No. 1 seed already clinched.
Can the 49ers make it five straight playoff wins against the Packers? Or will Jordan Love keep the Cinderella story alive and bring the 7-seed Packers within one game of the Super Bowl? Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the Packers at 49ers NFC Divisional Round playoff game.
