Bayern Munich open ‘talks’ to sign Chelsea star as Christopher Nkunku makes transfer decision

By | August 15, 2025

Bayern Munich have reportedly started direct talks with Chelsea over the possible signing of Christopher Nkunku.

The German champions are exploring their options before the transfer window closes, and Nkunku is said to be open to a move back to the Bundesliga.

Chelsea, however, are only willing to approve his exit if it’s a permanent deal. Bayern are considering a loan with an option to buy, but no agreement has been reached yet.

Sources ( via Florian Plettenberg) suggest Max Eberl is now leading negotiations for Bayern.

Nkunku, 27, joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig for around €60 million in 2023 but has struggled to hold a regular place due to injuries and competition.

His contract runs until 2029, yet Chelsea’s interest in signing Xavi Simons could further reduce his minutes this season.

Why Bayern want to sign Christopher Nkunku?

Bayern’s forward options have been under review this summer. A move for Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade has stalled, leaving them searching for other targets.

Nkunku, who scored 20 goals and provided 15 assists in his best Bundesliga season, offers versatility in attack — something Bayern value highly.

His previous success in Germany makes him an attractive option, and with his market value now closer to £30 million, Bayern see an opportunity to secure a deal at a reduced cost.

Chelsea’s willingness to sell also comes from the need to raise funds. They paid over £50 million for him last year but are ready to accept less now.

Leipzig have also been linked with bringing Nkunku back, but Bayern appear to be ahead in the race.

Talks are ongoing, and with the window closing soon, both clubs are under pressure to find common ground. If a deal happens, Nkunku could be swapping Stamford Bridge for the Allianz Arena before the week is out.
