Belgium have their Euro 2024 destiny in their own hands as they prepare for their final Group E game against Ukraine in Stuttgart.
A 2-0 win over Romania last time out put Domenico Tedesco’s side on three points from two games — the same tally accrued by the other three sides in the group.
It could make for an engrossing 90 minutes of football and permutation calculations as Belgium, Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia all battle for a place in the Round of 16, which begins on Saturday.
The Sporting News is following Belgium vs. Ukraine live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Belgium vs. Ukraine live updates, highlights from Euro 2024
23 mins: Castagne gets forward to cross and Zabarnyi gets up for an important defensive header with Lukaku lurking. The ball ends up with left-back Theate, who batters a particularly optimistic strike well wide.
21 mins: More vulnerability in transition from Belgium and the front two of Yaremchuk and Dovbyk are on the charge. The latter drags a wretched shot wide.
20 mins: Ukraine have been under pressure but they get through midfield too easily here. Yaremchuk lets fly but it’s to close to Casteels.
14 mins: Zabarnyi clears behind so De Bruyne gets another go but his next corner is too deep.
13 mins Brazhko carelessly hits the ball straight at De Bruyne, whose deflected shot loops behind for a corner.
12 mins: Doku dances inside Tymchyk but can’t find De Bruyne, he gets another go and finds his captain but Tymchuk nicks in. Now Onana tries to slide in De Bruyne down the right channel but there’s a bit too much on the pass. Nice idea.
9 mins: De Bruyne picks up the pieces in midfield with a lovely drag back and backheel. The Belgium fans chant their hero’s name.
7 mins: De Bruyne accelerates in field. You don’t want to see him in these areas if you’re Ukranian. The Manchester City playmaker slots a pass through for Lukaku to bustle onto. He can’t get all of it with his left foot under pressure and Trubin saves.
4 mins: Mykolenko motors into a challenge and there’s a crossing opportunity that Casteels gathers. Now Doku goes for the nutmeg on Tymchyk and gets a meaty challenge in response. Ukraine definitely fired up.
Kickoff: 1st Half
Off we go and Ukraine get forward from kickoff, Yaremchuk wins a corner. It comes to nought but that’s an enterprising start. For Belgium, Doku and not Trossard is initially stationed on the left.
3 mins before kickoff: Anthems time. As they have been all competition, each Ukraine player is wrapped in their national flag for the pre-match pleasantries.
20 mins before kickoff: Ukraine were starting at elimination after being hammered 3-0 by Romania in their first game and nursing a halftime deficit against Slovakia. But goals from Mykola Shaparenko and Roman Yaremchuk completed a turnaround for a side who have got used to overcoming adversity on and off the pitch.
40 mins before kickoff: The teams have just started their warmups and a tall task awaits Ukraine as boss Serhiy Rebrov is without Mykhailo Mudryk and Victor Tsygankov. Neither winger is part of the matchday squad and their absences might have earned centre-forward Artem Dovbyk a reprieve. LaLiga’s top scorer last season has so far flattered to deceive at the European Championship.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Once more into the breach for Romelu Lukaku tonight. It feels like Belgium’s striker has done everything but score at this tournament. Well, he has scored three times, only for VAR to ruin his fun on each occasion. Everything about Lukaku’s play appears to be in good order as he gets back into the groove with long-time ally Kevin De Bruyne. There was also a nice assist for Youri Tielemans’ pleasing opener against Romania. With meaty numbers like 85 goals in 117 international appearances, another goal surely can’t be far away.
The story continues. 🙏 #EURO2024 pic.twitter.com/ffuN2ijnkI

On the injury front, Axel Witsel (adductor) and Thomas Meunier (thigh) did not play any part in the win over Romania and remain doubtful for Wednesday’s showdown as well. Arthur Theate downplayed concerns over his fitness after being replaced in the 77th minute with a blow to the thigh and the Rennes defender was fit to start.
Despite his best efforts, the ball just will not cross the line for Belgium’s all-time top scorer Romelu Lukaku at Euro 2024, who has seen three goals ruled out by VAR so far.
